Book Spotlight: RETURN TO RUBY’S RANCH by Rhonda Frankhouser

Fellow Soulie and western romance author, Rhonda Frankhouser, is on my blog today! Check out her latest western romance, RETURN TO RUBY’S RANCH. Looks like a great story! ❤

unnamed

Ruby Lattrell spends her days caring for her ailing father and younger brother. When they no longer need her, her life lacks purpose. Then she inherits Ruby’s Ranch – the only real home she ever knew – the place where her mother mysteriously vanished.  The smell of fresh cut hay and the most handsome cowboy she’s ever seen, Billy McCallister, greet Ruby when she arrives at the ranch.

Billy always dreamed Ruby would return home. When he finally sees her standing on Granny’s porch, now a mix of that sassy young girl he once knew and the reassured, sensual woman she is today, he knows his heart hasn’t misled him. Before she can fall into the timeless love that Billy offers, they must solve the mysteries that haunt Ruby’s Ranch. Will digging up the past hurt more people than it helps? Will the truth they discover tear Ruby and Billy apart?

Snippet:
The old, beat-up Chevy pickup came to an abrupt stop about a foot from the back of Ruby’s prized Jeep. She scowled with disapproval as the driver shoved open the door and dropped to his booted feet before the engine even had a chance to shut off.
“Help you, miss?” he asked, with a slow, deep twang, wiping the dirt from his hands with a handkerchief he’d pulled from his back pocket.
She squinted against the midday sun a little harder now as his voice rang a touch familiar. She watched him for an over-long moment, the mother cat twisting her lithe body around his legs in greeting. Sweat glistened on his tanned, muscular arms as he bent to pick up the kittens that came out to join their mother.
She smiled. There had to be something special about a man who elicited the love of animals. He was at least six foot two, and built like he could lift a hundred pounds straight over his head with no problem at all. A smudge of dried mud followed the line of his strong, stubbled jaw. He could be the most handsome man Ruby had ever seen. Not a sophisticated, city kind of handsome. More a Russell Crowe, gladiator, kind of handsome.
The irritated scowl returned to his face after he put the tiny, tabby kittens down, almost like he’d just remembered he wasn’t pleased about being pulled away from something important. This made him all the more interesting. Part of Ruby was glad she’d been such a bother. The day just became more intriguing.
“They’re adorable. And they seem to like you.” She tried to break the awkward silence.
Curious, soulful green eyes peered out from under his dusty Stetson hat. He gazed first at her well-worn Justin cowboy boots, then slowly up her long legs to the khaki shorts, pausing momentarily at the denim shirt she had tied loosely around her waist, showing just a hint of pale skin. His gaze stopped momentarily at the mess of red-blonde hair she’d pulled away from her face, before he finally met her eyes.
Ruby held her giggle as he finished his perusal, not wanting to make him self-conscious since she’d recognized him. Billy MacCallister. Had to be. My, how he’d grown from the runny-nosed brat who used to follow her around so many years before. He’d been the pain-in-the-butt, kid brother of her best friend.
But, this grown up Billy MacCallister was a whole different creature. Mercy, he’s definitely a full grown man now. Ranch life looks good on him.
“So,” Ruby avoided his eyes to keep him at a disadvantage for just a bit longer. She reached down to pet the dogs again, calming them. “How’s your sister these days, Billy?”
He stopped wiping the dirt from his jeans and searched to get a better look at her face.
“What’s the matter, Billy? Think you’re seeing a ghost?” A smile crossed her lips.
“Ruby?” he asked, quietly at first then louder. “Ruby?” This time with unashamed excitement. Billy took two long-legged strides toward her, tilting his hat to get a better look. “Well, look at that, it is you.”
Before Ruby had a chance to respond, he lifted her off the step and twirled her around, not caring at all that she now wore half the dirt he once had all over him.
The enticing scent of musk shampoo, salty sweat, and horses swirled around her, drawing her in. How could a man smell that good after working in the mud? It took all her strength to keep from leaning in and making a fool of herself. He smelled like home to her and she had to admit, it felt good to be held.
“Billy, good grief, put me down.” She tugged at her shirt to keep it down, embarrassed. The pups jumped up, anxious now to play, as Ruby tried to gain composure. Not an easy task when being twirled around by a handsome cowboy.
“Ruby Lattrell, it’s so good to see you. How the hell are you?” The honest joy in seeing her poured from him. “Oh my God, you look fantastic!” He set her down and brushed the hair away from her face, looking her over now with those same hungry eyes he’d had as a love-struck kid.
She glanced away, self-conscious. When she finally mustered the courage to gaze up at him, she couldn’t help but return his infectious smile. There was no worry there, or pretense. The tiny lines around his joy-filled eyes showed only that he knew how to smile. How to laugh. Something she’d forgotten how to do a long time ago.
“Well, that’s certainly more of a welcome than I expected.” She stepped back to get some space and a better look at him. He had to be coming up on thirty now. Strapping. Still driving his mom crazy with that unruly chestnut hair tucked behind his ears, no doubt. Same innocent, broad smile that held secrets.
He continued talking and following her every move, anxious to know everything all at once. Where had she been? How had she stayed so perfect? Finally, he realized she hadn’t said a word. He stopped then, smiled that secret smile again, his eyes slowly filling with concern. “Ruby, I’m sorry I’m just going on. How are you? Are you all right? Oh Lord, I’m so sorry about your grandmother.”
Ruby flushed when he caught her staring. “Oh, I ah, I’m fine. Thank you, though. I can’t believe she is gone. This place will be really weird without Granny Rube here.” She took a step back toward the door, gathering herself, hoping she’d find the key in the usual hiding place so she could make a graceful exit.
“You don’t act fine.” He caught up with her, supporting her elbow like a real southern gentleman. “Let’s get you inside.”
Ruby didn’t protest. She kind of liked the fuss he made. This was someone she’d known for nearly all her life. It felt good to know he’d missed her.
“Just wait till Claudie finds out you’re home. She’s going to just die.” He reached behind the rusted iron pot for the key and turned it in the lock. “She’s not living out here anymore. She’s got a place in town. Married a nice city guy who moved here from Arizona, Mike Calloway. They bought old Fike’s Market and fixed it up real nice. Doing real well with it. She likes living in town so much better than out here.” He kept talking as he closed the door behind them.
The familiar smells of the house hit Ruby first, distracting her from what Billy was saying. Gingerbread cookies, Pledge furniture polish giving off an ever-present hint of lemon.
Ruby stopped in the entry, closed her eyes, and visualized her mother and Granny Rube laughing in the kitchen, handmade aprons tied around their waists, shoving cookies in that old Wedgewood oven, sharing private giggles.
Ruby stood for a long while as she replayed the memories over in her mind, only vaguely aware Billy had gone silent and held a supportive hand at the small of her back.
“Welcome home, Ruby,” he whispered, his sweet eyes searching hers.
She didn’t know why, but just then she couldn’t keep herself from turning and wiping the dust from his cheek, feeling more true compassion from this one understanding look than she’d ever felt before.
“Thanks, Billy.” She realized suddenly her eyes filled with tears. “Thanks for making me feel so welcome. I’m glad to be home.”
She felt as if she’d stepped back in time. She was just a teenager when she left home almost two decades ago. Nearly everything in the house remained in the same place. The fireplace room still held the same worn velvet couches and mahogany side tables. The faded ivy wallpaper she’d helped Granny hang curled at the corners where moisture and age had gotten to the glue. The heirloom rug passed from her grandfather’s family, now worn and fraying around the edges.
The same photos capturing a more innocent time continued to be displayed on the dusty river-rock mantle. Yellowed images of Granny Rube’s parents looked too small and frail to have endured such a rough pioneer life. Next to that picture, Ruby saw the photo of her Grandpa Mac, taken only days before he was trampled to death by his prized bull, Heathen.
Ruby picked up the tarnished frame and held it close, realizing only now how handsome a man her grandfather had been, tall and lanky, his deep set eyes full of the devil. Reminded her of her mother.
“Granny used to say it served him right to get taken by the one beast on the ranch that was ornerier than him.” Ruby wiped the dust from the frame and replaced it back on the mantle in the exact place it was before. “Momma told me Granny put Heathen down herself with a twelve-gauge shotgun the night he killed Grandpa Mac, but I still don’t know if that’s true. She had such a flair for the dramatic, it was hard to tell fact from fantasy.”
“Your granny was a good woman, Ruby,” Billy finally offered, a measure of respect in his voice. “Always remember that. She helped me out more times than I can count.”
“I’m just sad I missed so many years with her. All I have are old memories of how things used to be. Silly stuff like, I remember when she calmed Jake and me during those hell-raising thunderstorms, and chased us into the pond when we were driving everyone nuts because we were so bored.” Ruby turned away from the photos and took in the room once again. “She always had time for us. I can’t believe I let her die alone.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

unnamed-1
Rhonda discovered she had a knack for storytelling after she was diagnosed with cancer at a young age. To avoid dwelling on her own mortality, she sat down with pen and paper and got out of the way of her subconscious mind. Words and characters poured out of her from some hidden place inside her soul.  She discovered that writing was not only cathartic and healing but a necessary function for her future sanity.

Her first novel, MY LAST DAY, gained the representation of agent Ben Camardi, at Harold Matson Company in New York. This is a heart wrenching tale of a young woman seeking love and closure on her last day of life.  Her second and third novels, SHADOWING SOULS and RUBY’S RANCH, were quick to follow.  Each story has a contemporary romantic flavor, a solid family dynamic and a paranormal twist. RUBY’S RANCH will soon be available from
SoulMatePublishing.com, Amazon, and Barnes and Noble.

Rhonda lives in central California with her Kisa, (Knight in Shining Armor), their beautiful and talented daughters, and two mischievous pug puppies, Geddy and Ruby. When she is not writing, she is supporting hospice patients as a volunteer coordinator, playing golf with her husband, or reading the latest masterpiece from one of her favorite authors. She is a member of the RWA – PAN community and the local chapter, Yosemite Romance Writers.

Interview with multi-genre author, Claire Gem!

Claire Gem is back on my blog for a special author interview! She’s talking about her latest rockstar romance, THE PHOENIX SYNDROME, and it sounds positively AWESOME! Read on to find out more about Claire and her fabulous books.

Welcome, Claire! Tell us about your latest release. 😀

The Phoenix Syndrome is a rock star contemporary romance that’s set in Boston. My heroine, Lannie Marvin, is a research tech in a pharmaceutical lab who has a very bad birthday. First, she’s turning forty. Second, she finds out her marriage is over—has been for quite a while, she just didn’t get the memo. And then at work she gets bitten by one of the mice they’re testing a new drug on—one that’s designed to enhance the libido. Lannie snaps, kidnaps her sister-in-law, and heads off to chase an old dream—a career in music, and a new crush—the drummer of a heavy metal band.

Now THAT is awesome!

Said drummer and composer for the band, Tristan Allard, has a cancer benefit concert every year for his late wife. He’s having a hard time writing new music since he lost his muse. So when a sexually charged Lannie nearly plows him over at the backstage reception, he’s more than ready to get to know her better—along with her interest in music composition.

But their frenzied affair can’t last long. Tristan is headed back to the U.K., and Lannie discovers an elevated sex drive isn’t the only effect of the new drug.

The testing mice have gone deaf.

*gasp* Wow, Claire! That’s a fantastic premise! I love it! ❤ What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?

I’m going to answer these in reverse order. I had a lot of fun writing this book, since the idea came to me after an actual incident much like the one in the first chapter. I am a heavy metal fan, and attend live concerts often. After one concert, I really did jokingly threaten to run off with the drummer. That was the spark that brought this story concept to life. I do work in a scientific research lab, so researching details about the mouse testing took only a walk down the hall. That was the easy part.

The hard part was putting myself into the shoes of my heroine, Lannie, whose husband has been cheating on her for years, and announces he’s leaving on her fortieth birthday. I have been very lucky in my marriage, having just celebrated 38 years with the same hero. If this really did happen to me, I think I would def go a little crazy. The drugged mouse bite just gave Lannie that much better an excuse for her antics.

I can totally understand that as I would have the same difficulty as you. And I’m also a heavy metal fan! \m/ Woot! If you could bring one of your characters (villain or hero) to life, who would you choose? Why?

I would love to bring Lannie to life, because I think she and I would become besties. She’s a soft-hearted romantic, a gritty realist, and a never-give-up fighter. I think she and I are a lot alike.

Awesome. 🙂 Paramount Pictures wants to make a movie about your latest novel. Who plays the main characters?

95bce1e7b0cfbfc0a1ab847f88bc49b7

Penelope Cruz for my heroine. Not sure if she can hide the Spanish accent for this role, but if she can’t, I’ll change the script—and Lannie will be Spanish too.

colin_farrell

Colin Farrell for my hero, without hesitation. I may have to run that audition myself, though. For obvious reasons.

*swoon* I love Colin Farrell! And Penelope Cruz is gorgeous. ❤ So tell us a little about yourself.

I was born and grew up in New York, then lived in several other states over the years before settling in Massachusetts nine years ago. My husband and I have three children—twin sons, and a daughter who made us grandparents four years ago. Before my debut novel was published in 2015, I was a regular feature writer for a number of national magazines. My memoir and my debut novel came out within months of each other. Since then, I have written and published three other romance novels, and am almost ready to release my fourth.

Besides writing, marketing, and designing book trailers, my hobbies include collecting exotic orchids, and raising freshwater angelfish. I love spending time with my family, eating out, chocolate, and good wine—preferably all at the same time!

I’m with you on the latter! 😀  Tell us one thing about yourself your readers may not know about you.

If they didn’t, they know now—I’m a closet heavy metal fan. At concerts, though, I’m never the oldest one there. My older brother, who goes with me, is.

Ha! Love it! So what are you working on now?

I’m working on another paranormal ghost romance, Spirits of the Heart. This story takes place on the grounds of an abandoned mental asylum in the town where I grew up. The hero is a nighttime security guard, and the heroine works in an addiction unit on the grounds. They are drawn together by the persistent ghost of a little girl who is desperately seeking the spirit of her father who died in the asylum years ago.

Another premise to love! Looking forward to it. 😀 Thank you so very much for stopping in and telling us about your great stories, Claire. Where can we find you?

EXCERPT:

But then there was the drummer. If not for the overhead monitors panning in for close-ups during the performance, I might never have known he existed. What a travesty that would have been.

In a word, he was . . . magnificent. He sat like a king on his throne at the elevated rear of the stage, sparkling silver-flake drums surrounding him like loyal minions. The monitor directly over our seats focused on him often, so close and so clear I could see the sweat glistening on sculpted upper arms, bare beneath a black muscle shirt stretched taut across a broad chest. Some sort of ink crawled over one bicep. A black-and-white paisley bandanna covered most of his head, but long, dark curls framed his face and clung damp against his neck. His facial hair, limited to a sparse mustache and goatee, was chocolate brown. I indulged in the fantasy that his eyes were that same sweet, smoldering color.

His passion for his work was palpable. Hands flying, head bobbing, he was completely engrossed, as if the music were a drug he was tripping on. His hooded eyes gave him the look of a sleepy lover, but when he did open them, I could swear he was gazing directly at me.

Looking back on that night, I can’t be sure how long we’d sat there before I fixated on my drummer boy. The music, which at first grated on my senses as way too loud and completely discordant, gradually began to permeate my brain. Before long, my bare toes started tapping against the carpeted floor. I freed one hand from my cup of wine to pat my thigh in time with the music. When my head began to bob, almost of its own accord, I smiled.

Ah, now I know why they call progressive metal fans head bangers.

EXCERPT:

Jon only had time to take a single breath before a dark boot materialized in front of his face, the heel aiming straight for his throat. He snatched it before it made contact and twisted hard, thrusting it away from him. The limb yielded beneath his grip as his attacker collapsed beside him, metal clattering nearby. He levered to his feet, pulling a KA-BAR from his boot as pain lit up his nerves, setting his teeth on edge. His attacker was already standing, the blade of a gorgeous double-edged Kris sword pointed at his throat.

Holy shit.

His opponent was female, wearing a slim-fitting black battle uniform and carrying enough artillery to outfit a small army. Her jet-black hair was tied in a long braid and a black mask covered the lower half of her face. Her dark, almond-shaped eyes revealed her Asian heritage, her skin the color of caramel. A scabbard stretched across her back, strapped to her chest, along with the M16 she’d used to tear up the warehouse.

Jon took a step back, but she didn’t hesitate, launching at him with the blade. Metal clashed and sparks flew as he parried the long sword’s quicksilver arcs with his dagger. Although she limped from her injured leg, her strikes were hard, fast, and precise, each blow intended to kill. He nearly tripped over the pirate’s body as she backed him against the wall of the refinery, and he ducked as the blade screeched along the brick.

Before Jon straightened, he jabbed the butt of his KA-BAR into her knee and she yelped, stumbling backward. He slashed at her and caught nothing but air as she lurched away from him. She swung the Kris at his head and he raised the KA-BAR to engage and bind the sword. Both of their weapons trembled as their eyes locked on one another across the tangle of deadly metal.

And as her smoldering gaze drilled into him, he smelled it.

Dama de Noche.

The Lady of the Night, a nocturnal blooming flower he’d first smelled years ago in Nepal, when he was a human soldier. The scent was unmistakable, underlying the incense of vampire. The stench of leech didn’t belong to her, but the floral aroma was all her own.

She’s not a vampire.

Stunned by the revelation, Jon wavered, and she quickly took advantage of him. She sidestepped and lunged at him, sinking the blade in his shoulder. He shouted, dropping his KA-BAR as pain erupted from his dominant limb. Moving lightning fast, she yanked the blade out and sliced an arc across his chest. Luckily, she only scored his Kevlar, and as the sword swooped around again, Jon caught it with his gloved hands, silver biting into leather.

“You’re a hybrid,” he ground out. “I’m on your side!”

She pushed hard against him, drawing blood. “Bullshit.” Her voice was a rich contralto, edged with a growl. “You reek of Temhota.”

The Dama drew back and chopped at his belly, but Jon blocked her with his forearms, metal jarring against his bones. Finally, he managed to kick the blade out of her grip and it spun away, clattering to the ground. She somersaulted backward to retrieve it, but Jon caught hold of her braid in mid-air and wrenched on it. She cried out and landed face-first on the pavement, her breath audibly whooshing from her throat.

Jon wound her braid around his hand like a rope and straddled her, pinning her down. He tore the M16 off and tossed it as she writhed beneath him, fighting hard. Yanking her head up, he leaned close to her ear. “I’m not your enemy,” he hissed.

Her already shallow breath quickened and her struggles intensified, her sweet scent pumping from her pores in cloying waves. Panic. Fear. Restraining her like this completely terrified her.

Jon let up, knowing it was a mistake, but the shred of humanity still left in him couldn’t resist. The Dama slammed the crown of her head into his face and his retinas exploded in a staggering palette of reds, whites, and grays. His nose caved in, but not so far as to bury the bony shards into his brain. Blood poured out of him like a leaky faucet as he fell back, propping himself up on the wall of the refinery.

She was on him in an instant, chopping the edge of a flat hand into his trachea before smashing a fist in his ear. She wobbled to her feet as he struggled desperately to breathe—remember Jon, you don’t have to—and she gave him a vicious kick to his solar plexus, doubling him over. The pain was terrific, a cacophony of agony echoing from every corner of his body.

Jesus Christ, she was beating the shit out of him.

The Dama stood there, shaking, the fabric of her fallen mask fluttering to the ground. Jon blinked, trying to clear his blurred vision as she picked up her sword. He stole a glimpse of her face as she flung the mask up with the blade and caught it. A tattoo marked her cheek, the black symbol unmistakable but jagged, as if she’d thrashed during the process.

The same mark he’d painted on his chest lay branded on her face—the emblem of the Temhota.

Jon yanked down the neckline of his shirt, much like he had with the pirate, but this time he wiped at the mark, smearing it. The Dama paused in front of him, eyes narrowed, a gash marring her forehead. Even with the mark of his enemy on her face, she was breathtaking, and he didn’t have much breath left to spare.

“Not real,” he said past swollen lips, lifting trembling fingers stained with both paint and blood. “No mark.”

“But you are a leech.” She pointed the serpentine blade at the hollow of his throat.

He nodded, swallowing iron. “I work with the Senary. I used to . . . I used to be human. I’m not what you think I am.”

“You stink of them.” Her lip curled in a snarl.

He nodded again, every muscle in his body screaming. “Because I’m one of them. Yet I’m not.”

Brilliant. Maybe a few of those bony shards made their way into his brain after all.

She flipped the sword deftly and held it in a two-handed grip, the sin qua non of impending decapitation. Her dark eyes didn’t have the cat-like gleam signature to vampires, but hate and anger bled through them anyway.

“Makes no difference to me.”

I have contemporary and sports romance author, Stacy Hoff, on my blog today! She and a “handsome dancer” are here to share her latest release, JOCKEYING FOR YOU. 😉 Check out her super fun post! 😀

Linda invited me to interview one of the characters in my new release, JOCKEYING FOR YOU. Although JOCKEYING is my fourth novel, I have never done a character interview before. So, for my first ever attempt at journalism, I decided to have a “chat’ with one of the main characters – who happens to be a horse. Luckily, for the brief time during this interview, the horse was able to speak English.

Stacy Hoff: Folks, please meet Handsome Dancer, a thoroughbred stallion with a bit of an attitude problem.

Handsome Dancer: Hey, that’s not fair! I don’t have an attitude problem. It’s everyone around me who is a nay-sayer.

Stacy Hoff: Neigh-sayer? Is that a pun?

Handsome Dancer: I guess so. It was inadvertent. I don’t joke around much; I’m a very serious guy.

Stacy Hoff: Serious about what?

Handsome Dancer: I have my heart set on winning the Belmont Stakes. But the humans in my life don’t have a clue how to get me to reach my true potential – or theirs.

Stacy Hoff: You must find that frustrating.

Handsome Dancer: You have no idea! I’ve got the drive, the talent, and the genealogy, all in my favor. Still, most humans have marked me off as a “loser.”

Stacy Hoff: Wow. That’s a harsh assessment. Why would they write you off like that?

Handsome Dancer: Because I’ve been depressed lately. I either sulk around the track, or throw jockeys off me.

Stacy Hoff: I can’t imagine the jockeys enjoy that. How’s it working out for you?

Handsome Dancer: It’s not good for me either. The racing association has threatened to take away my “gate card.” Without this, I’ll be sent back to racing school, instead of where I want to go, which is Belmont Park.

Stacy Hoff: Sounds like a serious problem. Anything the humans can do to help you? Maybe ease your depression somehow?

Handsome Dancer: Well, my new trainer, Ryder Hannon, seems real nice. She’s given me some farm friends to play with, so I don’t feel alone anymore. She’s real patient with me, too. It’s like she understands I’ve been longing for companionship. Now that I have friends, I’m finally thinking about getting back on track. Literally and figuratively.

Stacy Hoff: Have you started racing yet?

Handsome Dancer: Not yet, but my practice sessions with Ryder have me going at such fast speeds, I’m no more than a blur to the spectators. Ryder is the only person I’ll let ride me. Unfortunately for my Belmont goals, she’s a trainer, not a jockey. Well, she used to be a jockey, but she’s not any more. She says she fell off a horse once, so she won’t race again.

Stacy Hoff: Do you think she’ll ever be a jockey again? Your jockey, perhaps?

Handsome Dancer: Hard to say. I guess she and I both have a hurdles to overcome.

Stacy Hoff: There are no hurdles in thoroughbred horseracing. Only English riding events like “show jumping” use hurdles.

Handsome Dancer: Yeesh, I know that. I already said I’m not a pun-ny guy. I’m a racer, not a jokester.

Stacy Hoff: Duly noted. Thanks so much for your time, Handsome Dancer. I hope both you and Ryder Hannon make it to the Belmont Stakes one day.

Handsome Dancer: Thank you for your time, Stacy. If you don’t mind, please pass me a bag of carrots on your way out.

Stacy Hoff: Sure thing!

Cover Reveal: EYE OF THE PHARAOH by Nancy Fraser!

Fellow SMP author, Nancy Fraser, is revealing the cover of her latest paranormal/time travel romance today! Egyptian mythology is my favorite! ❤ Check it out!

23-eye-of-the-pharaoh

Title: EYE OF THE PHARAOH

Genre: Time Travel/Paranormal Romance (Egyptian themed)

Tag Line: Will an unexpected trip to 1920s Egypt be their downfall or, will an ancient guardian keep them safe?

BLURB:

Publicist Teri Hunter has her hands full promoting Professor Joshua Cain and his new non-fiction book, The Pharaoh’s Mummy. She’s not convinced it’s even possible to turn this absent-minded, modern-day, Indiana Jones into a best-selling author.

Dr. Cain’s PhDs in archaeology and art history have prepared him for almost anything on the lecture circuit and among ancient ruins. He’s just not sure about a book tour…or the sexy publicist sent to monitor his every professional move.

When an odd request falls in their laps while in New Orleans, Josh and Teri find themselves transported to 1920’s Egypt where they must resolve an ancient curse in order to be sent home. Will the dangers facing them hinder their success and threaten their very lives? Or will help from an ancient guardian keep them on-track and safe?

EXCERPT:

Wake up. Kick ass. Repeat.

Teri Hunter mouthed the motivational phrase she’d chosen for her personal mantra as she stepped across the threshold into the dark and musty storeroom.

A dim light shone from a glass-enclosed workroom in the far corner. Taking a tentative step forward, she faltered when the floorboards creaked beneath her feet. Something fast and furry brushed against her ankle. A shiver ran down her back, yet she fought the urge to retreat.

Do one thing every day that scares you.

This was obviously today’s obstacle. Were it not for her professional commitments and intricately organized schedule, she’d have no doubt bolted for the door and returned to the safety and illumination of the main building.

‘Sorry, but the storage area doesn’t have overhead lighting. Preservation of the antiquities. You understand.’ The dean’s words echoed in her head. To make matters worse, what little outside light there was had become nearly non-existent due to an impending thunderstorm.

Drawing a deep breath, she took a second step and then a third, winding her way past a half-dozen crates, some open, some not. To her left she heard a rustling of paper; to her right the distinct sound of footsteps.

Her apprehension grew, the hair on her forearms stood at attention. She’d barely made it halfway across the room before bumping into something large and solid. Reaching out, she laid her hand against the oversized object. Slowly, she raised her head and came face to face with the painted mask of an Egyptian noble. The chipped finish gave the death mask a deranged look.

“You come here often, big boy?”

FUN FACT!

The idea for Eye of the Pharaoh came about following a trip to the Field Museum in Chicago. For the longest time afterward, I couldn’t get the images of ancient Egypt out of my head. Then, out of the blue, I received a gift from a relative who had passed…a gorgeous necklace fashioned like an Egyptian collar. The late relative had no way of knowing about my recent fascination with Egypt so I took it as a sign. There was obviously a story inside me begging to come out.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Like most authors, Nancy Fraser began writing at an early age, usually on the walls and with crayons or, heaven forbid, permanent markers. Her love of writing often made her the English teacher’s pet, which, of course, resulted in a whole lot of teasing. Still, it was worth it.

Published in multiple genres, Nancy currently writes for four publishers. She has published twenty-two books in both full-length and novella format. Nancy will release her 25th book in early 2017. She is currently working on her next Rock and Roll novella and two other equally exciting projects.

When not writing (which is almost never), Nancy dotes on her five wonderful grandchildren and looks forward to traveling and reading when time permits. Nancy lives in Atlantic Canada where she enjoys the relaxed pace and colorful people.

Seven Things about Abbie Roads:
1. She loves Snicker Parfaits. Gotta start with what’s most important, right?
2. She writes dark emotional books featuring damaged characters, but always gives her hero and heroine a happy ending… after torturing them for three hundred pages.
3. By day she’s a mental health counselor known for her blunt, honest style of therapy. At night she burns up the keyboard. Well… Burn might be too strong a word. She at least sits with her hands poised over the keyboard, waiting for inspiration to strike. And when it does—the keyboard might get a little warm.
4. She can’t stand it when people drive slowly in the passing lane. Just saying. That’s major annoying. Right?
5. She loves taking pictures of things she thinks are pretty.
6. She’s represented by Michelle Grajkowski of 3 Seas Literary.
7. Her first book RACE THE DARKNESS is available for pre-order.
