Well, this is a mess.

Hi loves! Long time, no chat (since January, wowza). It’s been a very interesting few months, that’s for sure.

I’m okay, still haven’t come down with COVID-19 yet. Considering I’ve been working at 4 different hospitals and various offices across the state, I’m counting myself blessed.

Every day is getting worse here, but we’re hanging in there. Supplies of personal protective equipment are still pretty scarce. 😣 We’re seeing the surge in my state now and I’m hoping we can keep our hospitalization and death rates down enough to manage this. I’ve already been granted “disaster privileges” for every hospital in the area.

There are clearly WAY more positive cases than are being reported. The majority of people are not being tested (and asked to simply stay home and wait out their symptoms) because there are not enough tests, and frankly, not enough PPE to administer them. I’ve been wearing the same mask for the past week and plan to until it’s no longer functioning or soiled. We’re conserving as much as possible without risking lives, but other states are not so lucky. Many of my med school friends in NYC have told me the situation is a disaster there and looking pretty dire.

Unfortunately, we’re in this for the long haul since this virus is taking on a classic pandemic spread. I understand the economic impact is going to be profound if we don’t restart our economy, but I promise you, if we open back up too soon, that curve is going to shoot right up again and we’re going to lose more lives. We HAVE to balance these decisions carefully.

This is not about the mortality rate, per se, because most of us will survive this. It’s about the VOLUME of cases hitting the hospitals, as I’m sure you’ve all heard time and time again. It’s about the people who WOULD survive if they had a ventilator available to them, but may not have one if the hospitals are overrun. All of these comparisons to the flu are irrelevant because the flu causes a steady flow of infections. COVID-19 is more like a rising tsunami in terms of healthcare burden.

I know everyone is hopeful for drugs, but this virus is moving faster than we can imagine, and maybe they will help. Maybe they won’t. We can’t necessarily rely on this or a vaccine to suddenly cure everyone. While it’s important to continue work on both of these elements (and trust me, we are working on them), we also have to do damage control. We have to PREVENT this virus from spreading i.e. stay home, social distance, practice good hygiene, and remain out of harm’s way.

As you can probably guess, I haven’t done much in the writing realm of my life. But I do have some news to share and a book sale if you all need a little escape for a while. I think we could all use one!

(On a brighter note, gotta love coming home to this the other day! 😂😍 Hubby, my sister, and my BFF got me all the necessities! ❤️ PSA: the masks are unused 😏)

Hey loves!

It’s finally getting warmer up here in the Northeast! These past few months have flown by for me with work and the release of VERMILION LIES. There’s no sign of slowing down though, as the end of my fellowship year of medical training is rapidly coming to a close! Pretty soon I’ll be a grown-up attending (haha) after 10 years of medical education/training (14 if you include undergrad). It’s been a long haul, but it’s still worth it to this here writerdoc. ❤

VERMILION LIES now available in Print!

“. . . well-written, with plenty of action, steamy scenes and hardships for our main two characters. I would highly recommend this book!” – The Romance Reviews

Wherever Dax Knight sets foot, hell is bound to freeze over.

As a mercenary for the Order of the Senary, Dax departs for New England to assist his comrades in battling the vampire forces threatening to consume the Northeast. The last thing he expects to find is a gorgeous vampiress who surrenders to him entirely. Ensnared by her allure, their intense attraction ignites, and he discovers she isn’t what she seems.

Cindel Konstantinov has been on the run since she escaped her sire’s possession, trading one life of abuse and imprisonment for another. As her hope for freedom wanes, she encounters one of the infamous Knights, and his dangerous appeal is undeniable. After a life-altering moment of mercy, they careen down a path of secrets, lies, and a forbidden passion neither of them can resist. But when her past comes back to haunt them, they’ll have to face the consequences of their actions—and their desires.

Dax and Cindel will need each other more than ever as their world spirals into chaos. But are they strong enough to survive the oncoming storm?

(Sexy!) SNIPPET:

Cursing, he turned on the shower, cranked it to hot, testing the water with his hands. Once the spray reached a tolerable temperature, he climbed in, nearly groaning as the spray buffeted his sore muscles, soothing his aches and pains. Bruises covered him in a patchwork quilt of mottled color with various shapes and sizes, the largest spanning his entire left flank.

If he started pissing blood, then he’d fret.

Dax closed his eyes, exhaustion enveloping him like the steam along his skin. He’d hardly slept in the past week, and after fighting monsters for days on end, he felt like roadkill.

Never mind the mental tango he’d danced through.

Somehow this short trip brought out pieces of him he didn’t want to face, stirred parts of him he didn’t want to feel, showed him exactly who and what he was; a half-breed leech with a reflection, a fanged murderer with emotions, a monster just like her, and he couldn’t handle it. This gothic sorceress took everything he ever believed in and flipped it upside down, turned it inside out, warped it and sculpted it into something he could no longer recognize. She made him weak, made him stupid, and she made him feel alive again.

And if he didn’t end this soon, she was going to be the end of him.

Grabbing the soap, he lathered himself up, ensconced in sweet, flowery musk, when the tang of her ripe cherry scent sideswiped him. Convinced he’d imagined it, he stilled, pulse leaping in his throat as he tilted his head and drew in a deep breath.

Nope. Definitely not hallucinating.

Something shifted in the hallway and he abruptly pulled open the shower curtain, exposing himself as steam escaped the stall in a rush.

Cindy sprang back a few feet, shock flooding her face before it flamed into embarrassment, her bloodless cheeks blushing a faint pink. She hovered by the door he’d unintentionally left ajar, her eyes raking over him as she worried her bottom lip with the tips of her white incisors.

His skin prickled, goosebumps rising over every inch of him from more than the cold air. Her scent intensified, her eyes growing impossibly darker, before she tore them away. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to—”

“What are you doing here?”

“I . . .” Her voice failed her and she cleared her throat, looking at the floor. “I’m just . . .”

“Cindy.” The single word was rough, husky, ensnaring her gaze. “Come here.”

Her breath left her in a soft whoosh as she ventured closer, hesitantly, cautiously, and he spurred her toward him with a curl of his fingers. When she reached the edge of the tub, her eyes smoldering with fear and desire, his galloping heart trampled all logic as he leaned forward and cupped her face.

“What do you want?” he murmured, his tone pitching deeper.

Gently, he lifted her chin, staring into midnight skies that held far too many secrets, veiling the answers he desperately wanted to find.

“I want to forget,” she whispered, lush mouth quivering. “Make me forget.”

Temptation beat under his skin with its own pulse.

Then he dipped his head and kissed her.

A brush of lips, a bit of pressure; he tried to take it slow, to keep it chaste, but when she moaned against him, he could no longer rein himself in. Her lips parted and he plunged his tongue between them, his piercing grazing the soft recesses of her mouth as he dragged her into the shower with him.

About Abbie Roads

Abbie Roads loves Snickers Parfaits and acrylic pour painting. It’s her new obsession. The pour painting. Not the parfaits. Though the parfaits would qualify as an obsession too. She spends her days a mental health counselor always looking on the brightside, but at night she likes to write dark and dangerous things—with kissing and sexy times. She loves reading inspirational quotes and stories about serial killers. She is married to her favorite fellow and they have two cranky old rescue dogs that are not spoiled. Not at all. Okay. Maybe a little. Alright, the dogs are terribly spoiled, but they do give lots of cuddles and kisses in return.

Happy October! Here’s a haunted tale from yours truly. 👻

Happy October!

My favorite month of the year! My birthday is October 28th and Halloween follows shortly after, so can’t beat that. 😉 Not to mention I’m on vacation starting this Friday night. YAY!

A few personal notes: I recently signed a contract with an amazing practice in New England and I’M SO EXCITED (and terrified)! Life is definitely going to get interesting next July, LOL, but I’m looking forward to getting out there and doing my thing. Also, I’ll finally be getting back to first round edits on VERMILION LIES so you’ll have it on time in the Spring.

Have you watched THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE on Netflix? I am absolutely loving it so far (currently three episodes in), so I figured I’d share my own (TRUE LIFE) haunted house story for your reading pleasure. 😀

Alien

A Haunting in Southeastern Massachusetts

So I grew up in a haunted house as a child.

And I thought it was completely normal.

My family moved into a little cape in southeastern Massachusetts (in the same city where the infamous Lizzie Borden hacked her parents to death) when I was around five years old. They were quite excited to finally have their own home after immigrating from the Azores, Portugal and apartment hopping since I’d been born. The house wasn’t in the greatest condition, but my dad planned to renovate both the interior and exterior over the next few years.

Too bad he couldn’t get rid of the ghosts!

Let me get one thing out in the open first: I’m not super sensitive to the paranormal (certainly not like my sister, who experienced far more in this house than I). Since my family moved out of this house when I was in high school, I’ve literally never experienced another supernatural occurrence. The ghostly presences in this home were so strong even others sensed it. I do think there’s a gradation when it comes to these things, but I’m no expert, so that’s that.

It all started with the persistent pacing. I didn’t notice it at first, since my sister and I were kids running around making noise all day, but it was most obvious at night—someone kept walking up and down the stairs. The house was over a hundred years old, and yes it was creaky and constantly settling, but these sounds were just a little too rhythmic. If I was downstairs, I could hear people walking around upstairs when no one was up there. It was constant, back and forth, then it would stop for a period of time. My mom kept pawning it off as an old house, but I wasn’t convinced.

Also, the entire upper level of the house was always cold, especially the upstairs bathroom, no matter the time of year. One of my cousins (also only a child at the time) would completely flip out if he was left alone upstairs, screaming about the evil up there. Even though I didn’t think my ghosts were evil, I knew they were real, although I poked fun at him a little.

My sister and I would often hear voices at night. We both shared the same room and sometimes someone would whisper right along with us. We would both shut up immediately, holding our breaths and listening hard. The voices weren’t loud at all, barely audible really, and usually in different languages we couldn’t understand. One night, we heard a baby persistently crying. It terrified my sister so much, she dragged my mom into the room, and yes, even my mother heard it. She checked all the windows, and although it was the middle of winter, she told us it came from a neighbor’s house down the street. Bullshit! But she seemed entirely unsettled before she went back to bed.

Our ghostly residents liked to play tricks on us, too. Again, this all happened on the upper floor, where the blinds randomly dropped with a terrifying crack. This happened constantly. My mom kept saying it was because the blinds were old, but c’mon, really?! I think not. I used to sit at my computer, listening to a cassette tape on the radio, when suddenly it would shut off. I would hit play again and literally stare at it, waiting. Right before my eyes, the “stop” button was pushed, as if by an invisible hand. I guess my spectral roommates didn’t care for the music!

What else? My father (a believer) later told me he once heard a tremendous crash downstairs one night, as if someone had knocked over the hutch filled with glasses and porcelain dishes. Terrified, he went downstairs to investigate, thinking someone had broken into the house. To his relief, he found nothing—everything was in its place and all was silent. He was positive he hadn’t imagined it, and it still stumps him until this day.

And last, but certainly not least, when I was ten we adopted an adorable German Shepard named Legend. She was sweet, playful, and loved to run around the house, like any happy dog. However, she often leapt over the front gate (a standard chain-link fence) and would do so if riled up enough. She lived five glorious years before she one day leapt over that fence, chasing a motorcycle, and ended up struck by a car.

I was fifteen at the time and devastated. My dad was even moreso, because he loved Legend very much. There were a few days of silence after her death, but then we started to hear it.

Her running.

It would always happen randomly at sundown. We’d be sitting downstairs in the basement, watching TV or playing video games, when a loud gallop would suddenly resonate all around the house from outside. The noise was thunderous in the basement, and it sounded just like Legend running circles around the perimeter–the way she used to when she was alive and well. This went on for weeks. My dad was stunned and a little scared, but soon it stopped. Oddly enough, my mom never experienced it.

My sister also had an incident with the ghostly Legend, where she was folding laundry upstairs (where else?) and sensed something four-legged racing at her. When she looked up, something pushed her, like a dog’s front paws and she fell back. Of course, nothing was there, but she sought me out, terrified and in tears. At first, I didn’t believe her—none of us had ever been physically touched by anything preternatural in the house. But her tears quickly convinced me otherwise—why would she lie about something like that?

So that’s a quick overview of my haunted house experience (although looking back at this blurb, maybe not so quick, ha!). My sister later saw a psychic medium who told her a young boy of about eight and an elderly woman were our ghostly residents. The elderly woman died in the upstairs bathroom (where else?) but the psychic wasn’t quite sure about the young boy. The medium believed the pacing and cold patches were thanks to grandma, while the blinds/radio stints were the little boy’s shenanigans. The medium apparently knew all about it, which is a curiosity in itself, but hell, I could believe that.

Why not? After living in this house, anything seems possible!

My fellow SMP author, Raven Hudgins, has a new paranormal fantasy in her Death Callers series out today! Look at that cover! ❤ Happy Release Day, Raven!

Banshee+Cry_850x1275

BANSHEE CRY by Raven Hudgins

A year ago, Kaelin died. Now, banshee Aislin Gray will do anything to get him back, especially after hearing his voice in strange places. A trip to Hell? Sure. Aislin is not the only one looking for a soul from Hell, though. When Illium comes calling for his end of the deal, Aislin cannot refuse. With her sanity in the balance, Aislin will go through Hell and high water to find her love, even if he is not there.

Teaser:

Red and orange flames hissed and crackled, flicking out their tongues. Heat bore down from all sides. Everything around me burned and smoldered or burst into little spitfires at each turn of my head. Warmth spread up my skin.

I crinkled my nose. Even through the shirt I could smell singed hair and flesh. Pain seared up my feet. I jumped from foot to foot, the scent of burning rubber reaching my nose. Shit! My shoes were catching fire. Glancing down, I understood why.

The floor was made up of cracks and fissures like cooling lava, turning to magma. Yellow and orange slits hissed and sputtered. The ground was literally a minefield of fire and brimstone.

His body hardened, his heart thudding in his chest. If that wasn’t enough, the stirring low in his belly sure as hell was.

He wanted her. Badly.

And so did the leech inside him.

“Blaze?” She peered at him with concern, taking a step closer.

He snapped out of it, realizing she’d asked him something he completely missed. “Huh?”

“Do you want some coffee? Something to drink? Eat?”

Yeah, you. He swallowed his saliva, straightening. “I should get going.”

“Oh.” She tried to hide her disappointment but she was bad at it. She wants you to stay. “Where are you heading?”

“Probably home for a few hours. Rest up a bit.” And drink about a gallon of blood while thinking of you. “You know.”

Valerie set what he assumed was the bag of coffee on the counter. She took another step toward him as a wave of jasmine swept over him, tugging him in places he shouldn’t be tugged.

He took a reflexive step back. Goddamn it, he was fine. He’d been fine right up until now. What the hell just happened?

Bad idea, Blaze. Bad fucking idea to starve yourself and walk into her apartment at dusk, with that body, and that face, and those eyes, and that smell . . .

“I’ll show myself out.”

She looked entirely confused as he turned away and headed for the door. Christ, he was acting like he’d never been in a woman’s apartment before, and God knew he’d been in many. But he’d never been this hungry around a woman before—at least, not in ordinary circumstances. And he wasn’t famous for his control.

He could feel it, that ugly darkness inside him spreading through his veins, making his lips and toes tingle. The leech opened its jaws and yawned, sucking down what was left of his civility. His gums tightened, squeezing his canines, urging them to grow, to elongate.

To spring free.

“Blaze—”

He needed to get out. Now.

“I’ll see you in the morning,” he ground out, his voice a near growl. “Good night, Val.”

He slammed the door behind him and managed to stagger ten paces down the hall before his limbs stopped working. Sweat dripped down the sides of his face and trickled down his spine. His hands shook and he clenched them into fists. He stood there, chest heaving, heart pounding, fangs pulsing, cock throbbing. He closed his eyes and lifted his face toward the ceiling, trying to wrestle the monster down, trying to beat it back into submission.

But it was already too late.

Through the din in his head, Blaze heard a door click behind him, disengaging from its frame. It creaked open slowly as jasmine slithered through the hallway toward him, rising up and striking at his senses, delivering the final blow. He craned his neck and spotted her.

Valerie’s blond hair fell in a curtain as she peeked out, looking for him. Her eyes widened when she found him, still standing in the corridor, and she quickly retreated.

“Sorry,” she murmured, but before she could close the door, he was already there, his hand propped against it.

She looked at him in pleasant surprise. “Blaze, I—”

He didn’t give her a chance to finish. He seized her mouth with his before he slammed the door behind him and locked it shut.
