SOUL SONG, the next book in The Soul Mate Tree Series, now available!

The tenth novella in The Soul Mate Tree Series is available today! Check out SOUL SONG, a fab paranormal romance by the amazing duo, Mikea Howard!

Writing under Mikea Howard, we are actually Mindy Howard and Kelly Smith, sisters-in-law who share a love for romance, usually paranormal. We have spent the last several years reading and sharing books as well as authors, often making comments about how we’d love to write our own when we ran out of things to read.

While based on our TBR piles, we have not run out of reading material, we decided to write when the muse hit Kelly with a dystopian diesel world and an opening scene with the heroine running out into the woods. Mindy then saw her hero step in, and The Diesel War series was born.

When Cheryl Yeko and Char Chaffin (AKA CiCi Cordelia) asked us to join this project, we knew exactly who needed this magical tree to find his soul mate. Soul Song is a stand-alone, but set within our Diesel War Series. It is actually Book 2.5, taking place at the same time as Book 3.

THE LEGEND OF THE SOUL MATE TREE:

I am old, I am ancient, my purpose is clear

To give those who are needy a treasure so dear.

They who come to my roots, touch my bark, stroke my leaves

Find the soul of their lives if they but believe.

When I call and you listen, your prize will be great

If your heart remains open and you don’t hesitate.

Do you yearn? Be you lonely? Is your time yet at hand?

Reach for me and I’ll give to you. I’m yours to command.

For your trust, for your faith, keep my secrets untold

And I’ll gift you forever, to have and to hold.

An ancient legend spanning eras, continents, and worlds. To some, it’s nothing more than a dream. To others, a pretty fairy tale handed down through the generations.

For those in critical need of their own happy ending, a gift.

Dottie thought she had it all: a successful singing career, a handsome fiancé, and a starlet’s wardrobe. Sudden betrayal brought it all crashing down around her. Those she trusted most played her as nothing more than a pawn. One misstep while fleeing the scene trapped her in another world alone, save a mysterious visitor.

Guatimozin, an eagle shifter, has spent ages assisting people through the realm between life and death, leading them to join loved ones on either side. No one had ever made him want anything for himself until he discovered this city girl.

Forces plot against them and time is short. Soon, their chance for a happily ever after will be too late.

Short Excerpt:

Dottie wiped the tears from her face. Damn him, and damn his floosy too. She’d do what her mother constantly threatened her stepdad with, and remove his cock to wear it proudly on a chain around her neck.

I jus’ gotta find a way out of this kooky forest first.

Making her way back onto her feet, she dusted off her dress in a mindless motion. The fabric passed beneath her strokes smooth and dirt free. She studied the once vibrant red dress she’d worn on stage. The satin now appeared drab and colorless. Her bare feet peeked from beneath its hem, as clean as the moment she’d dabbed them dry from her bath. The blind sprint from her dressing room, across town, and up the hill, should have left them covered in filth.

In exasperation, she threw her arms in the air. “Swell. I mus’ be dead and I’m . . .”

She moved away from the tree to scrutinize her surroundings. As much as Dottie hoped she’d end up in heaven, her mother always insisted that, as a willful child trying to pass as something she wasn’t, her final destination would be a bit further down.

The sensation of electricity passing through the air made every hair stand on end as a matter-of-fact reply came from behind. “No, you aren’t dead, but you’re not exactly alive either. You’re in a realm known as the in-between.”

Spinning around, Dottie came face to face with a stranger. Like the tree, he appeared in color, only he wasn’t pink and purple. Instead, a tall man with reddish tan skin, swirling silver eyes, and waist length striking black hair, stared at her as though regarding a ghost. Thick muscular arms crossed over his chest as his shocked expression eased into a slow smirk, highlighting the defined beak-like nose, high cheekbones, and strong chin framing his mouth.

Nervously licking her lips, she couldn’t help but muse, Di Mi. Well hello, sailor.

Character interview with Abigail Grant from OMEGA MOON RISING!

Hey, lovelies! I have Abigail Grant from MJ Compton’s latest paranormal romance, OMEGA MOON RISING (check out the cover below *drool*). She’s talking about her dire family situation and her sexy hero, Luke Omega. Read on below to learn more about Abby and her story!

Welcome, Abby! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I just turned 21, but I feel so much older. As the first born of a sickly mother, I’m the responsible one. Somebody has to take care of the house and the family, so I do. My younger sister has a lot of issues and requires constant attention. And my stepfather—well, let’s just say he doesn’t fulfill the role my mother had in mind when she married him. So I have that to contend with, too. I thought I was worldly, but meeting Luke Omega changes everything.

Sounds like you have a full plate, for sure! What do you do for work?

My job was to take care of my mother and younger sister. Someday, I hope the local supermarket where Mama worked before she got sick will hire me as a cashier. I’d rather be a song-writer, but that doesn’t bring in money, and money is what keeps a roof over the family’s head and food on the table.

True, that. What about your free time? If you had a day to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

Someone I could truly trust would take over keeping tabs on my sister and I would find a place safe and quiet—a meadow or lakeshore–with my father’s guitar and compose.

Sounds amazing! What’s your favorite alcoholic beverage?

I don’t drink alcohol, but I have to say Moonsinger Beer, because it’s the industry that keeps my town alive. My father owned his own truck and contracted with Moonsinger to haul the product long distance. He provided a good life for us. And I met Luke at the annual Moonsinger Family Picnic. So yeah, Moonsinger Beer.

Good choice and for the right reasons. 🙂 What’s your favorite music?

Country music, of course!

Awesome! So more about this Luke Omega…what do you love most about him?

He does the right thing, even when he doesn’t want to. His instincts are good, even if his brain sometimes derails. He has always stood up for me, even when he thought he didn’t want me.

Sounds like a good man to me. 😉 Before the story began, what were your hopes for the future?

I was going to be a famous lyricist. I was going to sell my poetry to the local almost-famous band and his performance of my words would catapult us both into fame. Then I could take my sister and escape our horrible home situation.

So what changed?

Luke Omega, drummer for the afore-mentioned almost-famous band, sweet-talked me out of my panties . . . and my virtue.

*gasp* He’s a drummer, too?! I can totally see why he swayed you. ❤ I’d love to chat more, Abby, but it looks like our time is running out. :/ Any parting thoughts for our Dear Readers?

A girl’s first lover should tell her whether or not he’s a werewolf before he makes love to her. Finding out afterward is . . . a shock.

WHOA, yeah, no kidding! A good man, a drummer, and a werewolf…you really do have your hands full! 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by, Abby, and thank you, Dear Reader, for joining us! Read on to find out more about OMEGA MOON RISING and check out the excerpt below!

OmegaMoonRising3 final cover.jpg

Abigail Grant has a secret . . . and a plan to keep her younger sister from suffering the same fate. Her strategy would have worked if she hadn’t been seduced by sweet-talking musician Luke Omega. Suddenly she’s plucked from the life she wanted to escape, but her new circumstances only expose her to a different danger—or is it her salvation?

Luke has a secret, too. He believes he can change his destiny through willpower—and a little blue pill. When he inadvertently gets mixed up in the Grant sisters’ troubles and his pack alpha orders him to marry Abigail, his family insists he tell her he’s a werewolf. But Luke claims Abigail is not his life mate. She doesn’t need to know what happens to him on the full moon.

Until he accidentally stumbles across her secret. Then all bets are off.

EXCERPT:

She, Abigail Grant, had a date with Luke Omega.

Gary was going to kill her. But Luke Omega would be worth the grief, with his dimples, blond curls, and the indent in his chin. Plus he was a celebrity. But most importantly, he said he would help her get her songs in front of Toke Lobo. After the concert was late, though, and if Gary ever found out, he would make her life miserable.

But she had a date with Luke Omega.

Abby thought about what the lateness might also mean—beyond being a better time to run into Toke Lobo. Luke had been kind to Libby, which meant he was either trying to impress her or he was genuinely a sweet guy. Since nice guys usually ignored her, he must be trying to score points with her by sucking up to her sister, who was difficult at best. Maybe he wanted sex.

Abby wasn’t much of a dreamer any more. When she’d been a little girl and her father was still alive, when she and Libby and Mama were the suns to Daddy’s moon, life had been full of possibilities. But a freak accident left Mama a widow with two girls to support. The last fantasy Abby allowed herself was that Gary and Mama got married because they loved each other. A whole week went by before reality betrayed her.

Nowadays, the closest she came to dreaming was wishing Mama would get better and divorce Gary. But Mama was dying and the family needed Gary’s paycheck and health insurance. Needed to keep paying the taxes on the little house on Silver Moon Terrace in order to keep a roof over their heads.

Abby couldn’t bring herself to tell Mama being homeless might be better. Safer.

EXCERPT:

A billion butterflies battered Lexi’s stomach. She shifted her attention from Ross to the piano. Sure enough, the music had stopped, and Jake faced her from his seat on the bench. Man oh man, the heavy stare from those sky blue eyes sent shivers skittering down her spine. His gaze held the same intensity she remembered from him as a kid, as if he saw into the heart of people, exposing their deepest secrets. It had driven her crazy back then, and she’d spent much time teasing him, pulling his hair, trying to distract him from being so serious all of the damn time. They were teenagers—partying was supposed to be their sole focus.

With his ice-blue stare locked on her, Jake rose to his feet, all taut muscle and predatory power. His energy swept over her like a tsunami, forcing all of the moisture to abandon her mouth while parts much lower wept with want. Her inner Wolf howled, answering the call of this Alpha, the first Dominant male ever to make her sit up and take notice. Holy crap. Her muscles shook with the need to bound over to him, jump in his arms, wrap her legs around his torso and writhe against his hard, hot, tattooed body.

Jake said something to his uncle then stalked straight at her, cutting a path right through the middle of the tables and the many, too-curious patrons.

A whimper escaped her throat.

Surprise sparked in her brother’s brown eyes. “You’re kidding me. Him?” He burst out laughing. “Wow, sis, that’s some major, big-time irony right there.”

Darci’s expression conveyed her bewilderment. “Now what are you two talking about?”

Her annoying brother grinned. “See that angry Alpha headed our way? My sister here rejected him when they were teens and he’s apparently her—”

Lexi socked her brother in the ribs. “Shut it, Ross.”

“Ouch.” Ross rubbed his side and chuckled at her plight. The jerk. “Come on, Lexi, you have to admit the hilarity of the situation.”

No, she did not. Nor did she have to admit that J-Bird was right all those years ago. He was her mate. O to the M to the G…. They were mates.

Even so, he didn’t look happy to see her at all. In fact, he looked positively enraged. Shit, shit and triple shit. What a mess she’d made eight years ago. Well, she was woman enough to pull on her big-girl panties and fix it. She straightened her spine and lifted her chin in challenge, meeting Jake’s stormy stare. He halted before her.

I can do this. “Hey J-Bird. Nice to see you.” Lovely. Her voice sounded like she’d eaten the gravel from the lot in front of Gee’s bar. Embarrassment heated her cheeks.

One breath, two breaths, three…. J-Bird glared. Tension coiled between them in the silence. Lexi bit the inside of her cheek to avoid babbling at him. She’d said hello. It was his turn. Damn it, J-Bird, say something. He wasn’t making this easy.

“Alexina.” His arctic tone dismissed her and slapped her in the face at the same time, leaving her disappointed and confused. No one called her by her full name. No one except her parents when she’d done something wrong as a kid. He might as well have said, “Screw you,” while slamming a door in her face.

His focus shifted to her brother. “Hello, Ross. Been a while.” His hand shot out to grasp her brother’s in a cordial shake.

“Good to see you, Jake. Join us for lunch? My treat. We can catch up on old times.”

“No, thank you. I’m done. Nice to see you again, Ross.” Jake nodded at Darci. “Miss.” He brushed past them and out the door.

“What. Just. Happened?” The, “I’m done,” he uttered in his delicious British accent seemed aimed more at her than at her brother’s offer. And the fact he hadn’t even looked at her before stalking out all sexy in his gloom and doom? Yeah, that hurt.

“I think you know, sis.” The amusement left her brother’s face and sympathy glimmered in his gaze. “Question is, what are you going to do about it?”

She’d never run from a fight in her life. She wouldn’t start now. “Grab a table. I’ll be back in a second. Or not.” She ignored her brother’s knowing grin and hurried out the door.

Guest Blog and Author Interview with Celia Breslin!

Welcome, Celia Breslin, to my little corner of the internet! Today we’ll be talking about her latest release (check out that cover *swoon*) and learning a few things about her fictional world. Without further ado…

Tell us about your latest release!

Diamond Moon is the twelfth book released in Decadent Pub’s multi-author, shared world series. The series is set in The Black Hills of South Dakota. Much of the action happens in or around the small shifter town of Los Lobos. The Tao pack owns the area–the pack itself is fractured but on the mend after the death of its crazed and cruel Alpha.

Diamond Moon stars Ross, a Dominant Wolf, and his love-interest Darci, a human-wolf hybrid. Darci journeys to Los Lobos seeking help with her life-threatening shifts. She lands on Ross’s doorstep, romantic sparks fly, and… read the story to find out what happens next… 🙂

What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?

The most challenging thing to write about was Gee. Gee is a mysterious, badass, Werebear bar owner living in Los Lobos. He appears in every story in the series. He was hard because he’s not my character. That said, it was super fun getting to know him for his appearance in my story. Everything else flowed just fine for this book.

If you could bring one of your characters (villain or hero) to life, who would you chose? Why?

Wow, just one? There are so many I would love to hang out with. But if I have to choose one, let’s go with my vampire Jonas. You can meet him in my vampire series, The Tranquilli Bloodline. An ancient vampire originally from England, Jonas embodies extreme violence in a pretty package. He’s a man of few words, dark and moody, fiercely loyal and violently protective of those few people he loves, such as Carina, the series heroine. Why him? Because he’s utterly fascinating. I think we’d have a great chat!

Paramount Pictures wants to make a movie about your latest novel. Who plays the main characters?

Darci is 23, petite and curvy, with pale skin, green eyes and black hair styled in a pixie cut. Amanda Seyfried or Emma Stone, if they would die their hair black.

Ross is 29, 6’ 6” with a runner’s body of lean, hard muscle. Brown hair with red highlights worn straight to his shoulders. Brown eyes. If they could find an actor who resembles the cover model for the book, I’d be one happy writer! Or Chris Hemsworth or Alex Pettyfer…

Tell us a little about yourself.

I write urban fantasy and paranormal romance. My favorite paranormal creatures are werewolves, and vampires. Also have a soft spot for the Fae. Let’s see…what else… I’m a terrible morning person… Joss Whedon is my hero… I live in San Francisco with my family and two cats that love to drape themselves on my laptop when I’m trying to write. When not writing, you’re likely to find me reading or working out (really!).

Tell us one thing about yourself your readers may not know about you.

Hm… Little known fact about me: I was classically trained on piano from age six through sixteen, and sang in an a cappella group in high school.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on two more stories for Decadent Pub’s Black Hills Wolves series, featuring Ross’s two siblings, a younger sister and an older brother. More Wolf goodness, action, and love…

Where can we find you?

DIAMOND MOON excerpt:

He reached out with his Wolf senses. The feedback froze his fingers on the doorknob. Female. Damn, she smelled good. Human. Wolf. Wait…both? The copper tang of blood hit his nose. And injured.

He flung open the door. His abrupt move caught his visitor off guard, one small, white fist raised to knock. The woman startled and fell forward. Catching her, he pulled her inside, kicking the door shut with his foot.

he sagged against him, a shivering bundle of wet woman. Underneath the dampness, her scent drop-kicked his gut. Apples and cinnamon. Roses and honey. His body perked up, taking extreme notice. He fought the growl of possession threatening to tear out of his throat. Holy hell, had his potential mate just walked into his home in the middle of a storm?

The scent of her blood jump-started his brain into action. He lowered her gently to the floor. “Jesus. You okay?”

His instincts urged him to check her for wounds, but he was a stranger and didn’t want to spook her. But goddamn, he wanted to touch her. Peel off her wet clothes. See all of her. With a jacket covering her torso, tight jeans hiding her legs, and her ball cap pulled low on her face, all he’d seen so far was her quivering pale chin, full red lips, and those delicate, trembling hands.

“S-s-sorry, d-dripping all ov-v-ver your f-f-floor,” she said, teeth chattering. Her snow white fingers curled on the hardwood, arms trembling with her effort to keep herself upright. Blood streaked the wood. A line of liquid crimson slid down her jaw and dripped from her chin onto her jacket.

To hell with propriety. “You’re injured. Let me help you.” He pulled off her cap and damn near swallowed his tongue.

Big green eyes blinked up at him from a face so pale it made him think of moonlight. Drenched, short black hair lay plastered to her head, the ends framing features reminiscent of the fairies his sister loved to draw for the hidden-object games she designed. Ethereal beauty. My beauty. He stroked a knuckle down her cheek then ran his thumb over her soft, full lower lip.

She flinched and batted his hand away, falling to her side in the process.

Ross snapped back to reality with a healthy hit of guilt. “Shit. Sorry.”

His gaze shot to her forehead where a two-inch cut sent blood trailing over her prominent cheekbone with its silky-smooth skin he’d so enjoyed caressing—

Shit. He gave himself a mental ass kicking for scaring her. “I’m Ross. You’re safe here. Promise.”
