Revival of the Muse.

So…I want to know.

What inspires your writing?

I know, I know…LIFE, right? But what specifically drives your muse the most?

For me, it’s all about the music.

One of my co-residents recently introduced me to Spotify which is THE MOST AMAZING THING EVER AND YOU SHOULD ALL GO AND GET IT NOW (/plug). But seriously, SPOTIFY. I’ve created a playlist for every one of my novels or soon to be novels (and even for PUBLIC ENEMIES, my short story featured in Horrors of History). When I’m gearing up to get into the writing groove, I hit play on one of those babies and my muse goes NUTS.

But, you know what? I write in silence. I have so many voices in my head that music becomes distracting to my trance-like state. But when I’m away from the computer, my brain absorbs all of those notes and lyrics, and DAMN, a scene blasts through my mind like a hurricane and I write it down (or at least make notes about it) once it’s quiet again.

Art comes in at a close second for muse fuel and I’m a lurker at DeviantArt. I used to be a member (shhhh) when I did crappy art (SHHHH), but I keep my account active so I can continue to follow all the amazing artists I’ve discovered there.

Also, Tumblr–you are a giant inspirational timesuck. I don’t even want to sign up for Pinterest or I’ll never get shit done.

Of course, day-to-day experiences inject themselves into my writing, but I think they often do with many writers. For instance, in my current WIP,Β the heroine is based off a woman I met in the emergency room who’d been through a horror of all horrors. It left me feeling sick for quite some time and I had to somehowΒ purge this experience from myself–what better way to do it than write about it?

So tell me, fellow reader, what inspires you? Drop a video, image, line of poetry, whatever your creative heart desires. I’d love to see it!

P.S. I’m going to leave you with this because we all need a little RDJ sometimes. And, you know, muse fuel. πŸ˜‰

Down on his knees he sees the devil weeping/whinging his tongue…

Releasing the Demons revision status:

Eighty pages left! EIGHTY!

I do plan on blast reading my MS again and adding/changing a few things beta readers have pointed out to me, but it shouldn’t be too much longer. Then QUERYING! I have to go through all of my favorite places (since I’ve added a million agents and publishers to them) and tailor a list along with finalizing my query (obviously). This is one of the bright spots in my life right now and I have a lot of hope for this story. I don’t know if this is the greatest timing, but hell, when is?

Went to my local RWA chapter meeting today and it was great talking about writing and publishing again with the ladies. I’ve definitely decided to join (until I have to move away, anywho) and I’m excited, even if I won’t be able to make all of the meetings. It’s just nice to finally talk about writing with people face to face and to learn about the industry from experienced authors. They’re all very supportive and I’m glad to have met the group.

I can’t wait to start writing againβ€”it’s been so long! My head is bursting at the seams with this series and I hope I can finally get it all down on paper someday and out to the world.

And finally, I leave you with this, β€˜cause we all need this in our eyeballs. πŸ˜‰

Serenity through sound and motion.

Drove around a beach route in RI I used to take when I wanted to get away from everything–rolled down the windows, blasted the music, envisioned the stories in my head (sans cigarettes this time). Felt good. Felt relaxing.

Felt peaceful.

Wash the sorrow from off my skin, show me how to be whole again.

Releasing the Demons revision status:

I’m reaching the point where I’m getting extremely obsessive compulsive and nitpicky about word use, tense, punctuation, and grammar. I’ve slowed down considerably because of this and it makes me want to yank my hair out. I don’t know how people can become copy editors, SRSLY! I might have to do another blast read when I’m through just to make sure I didn’t screw it up worse than before.

In other news, I recently picked up the new Linkin Park CD Living Things and I am LOVING it. Although, there isn’t a Linkin Park CD I don’t love, so this was expected. πŸ˜‰ And OMG, the music videos they’ve released! HEART! Let me share them with you!

LOVE LOVE LOVE!

They definitely ease my revision pain. πŸ˜‰

Hope everyone is doing well and achieving their goals!

Maybe we’ll show some mercy, maybe you’ll get what you deserve.

I rewrote a scene, and I’m not sure if I’m quite happy with it, so I’m going to read it over again tomorrow. Sometimes giving it a few days helps me figure out if it works. I had to revamp (ha!) my big baddy into a whole new man (not Cyrus, Mathias for those who have read it). He has a new name, new face and a new story–I like him a whole lot better. Still has an “old world” attitude with a more modern edge. And he’s Russian. πŸ˜‰

I also had to rename my heroine. Her name was Olivia, but then a friend of mine pointed out that there’s an officer Olivia on the CSI show (which I’ve never watched) and that Rachel Vincent has a cop named Liv in her Blood Bound book. Considering my heroine is an NYPD detective, well, that wasn’t going to work out. So now her name is Valerie, but everyone calls her Val.

I realized I had a lot of tense issues throughout the draft, so I’m glad I’m going through this with a fine tooth comb. I’m cutting all the pop culture references and anything that could make the book age. Granted, it’ll age no matter what, but I can try to keep it as fresh as possible. I’m also cutting the medical jargon…sometimes I cannot control myself, lol.

I’m really happy and excited about this though. It’s good to feel that way again. πŸ™‚

I leave you with some of my musical inspiration for this book. Trent Reznor is my musical god, I swear.

Hope everyone is accomplishing all of their goals. πŸ˜€

Clarity.

We survived Sandy pretty well up here in Westchester, which I’m incredibly thankful for. We never lost power or hot water, and the flooding wasn’t too bad. I can’t say the same for lower Manhattan, and the scene is just really horrific down there. As of right now, I’m off work until further notice, since the clean-up efforts are going to be tremendous. Not to mention, the MetroNorth is pretty damaged (both by flooding and by boats being thrown onto the tracks). It really is a mess. Honestly, I’m just glad to be home.

I hope everyone in the area is safe and well. Please leave a message so I know you’re okay!

So, thanks to Sandy, I’ve had a lot of time to think about my writing and where I want to go with it. After mulling it over and getting some feedback, I’ve decided to dump Furious Angels into my slush pile.

This definitely hurts…a lot…but I’m also incredibly relieved.

It was my first book. It was over 200K words long and even after cuts, it was at 150K. The relationship was bad and amateurish. The overarching plot line itself was probably the only salvageable thing, but even that floundered towards the end. I think what hurts the most is the amount of time I’ve spent on it…writing, revising, cutting, revising, wash, rinse, repeat. I literally spent the last year trying to fix this mess between medical school and life in general, and you know what? It’s still a mess. I began to realize that I would never be happy with it, not without throwing the whole thing out and either rewriting it or dropping it.

I’ve grown as a writer, and I can now recognize these mistakes for what they are. I thought I was being too critical, but after having confirmed it with others, I now know my intuition was right. I kept reading about how most authors never published their first book, that yes, they learned very much from it, but I kept thinking, “I can make this work.” And now I know I can’t.

So I’m dropping it altogether, and making Releasing the Demons the first book in the series. I don’t have to tweak much, and most people who’ve read it said it could definitely be a standalone or a first in a series. I think the relationship is a lot more engaging, I’ve received nothing but good feedback on the book in general, and I really love this story–more than any story I’ve written so far. I feel like this is the “book inside me” and I really want to send it out into the world. It’s dark, it’s violent, and it was hard to write at times, but I think that’s why I love it so much–it challenged me like nothing else could.

So this is going to be my goal for November (and likely for the rest of the year)–revise RTD, polish it up, and query it. I may wait on querying until early next year (since after Nano, agents are bombarded with queries), but I’ll see how it goes. Then I’ll finally get back to a A Beautiful Lie, which I also love right now, and I’ll finish it up. Maybe I’ll have both done before I query. I need to map out this world more, write up bios, and just clarify what’s happening in my head. I’ve had this world embedded in my brain for years now, but I’ve never actually put it all down on paper. Maybe I need to do that.

I woke up this morning and it was just so perfectly clear to me. I haven’t felt that way about my writing in a long time.

Finally, I’m feeling a little optimistic about all of this.

And lastly, Happy Halloween everyone! Stay safe and may you eat lots of candy! πŸ™‚

This is dangerous, open up your head filled with shell shock…

Listening to “Mindfields” by Prodigy.

So tonight marks the end of my vacation. *sigh* Tomorrow I start studying for the second portion of my boards. Yay. *sarcasm*

I really needed the break though…desperately needed it. I feel more refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to take on the world again (okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little :P).

Anywho, I managed to add another 1.5K words to A Beautiful Lie over the weekend, which puts me at a total of nearly 8K for the week.

41529 / 100000
(41.53%)

Not the goal I aimed for (10K), but hey, my husband wanted a little attention too. πŸ˜› The craziest thing is that the plot for book four (Black Bullet, Jon’s story) came to me in its entirety over the week, which is terrible since now I want to write it! But it’ll have to wait until this one is over, at least. Of course, I still love writing every minute of ABL…I just get distracted by the shiny new idea (don’t we all?). And, you know, uhhh, maybe I should fix Furious Angels and get it out there…

I haven’t submitted my short stories/poems to the ezines I intended to, but I hope to do so this week in between studying.

I didn’t get as much running in as I would’ve liked due to the 100 degree days, but its been a little cooler, so we’ll see how this week goes. I’ve been reading 11/22/63 by Stephen King, and I really love it so far. No surprise, when do I not love his books? I spent some quality time with my pets, and all in all, life is good. I’m hoping studying for these boards won’t turn out to be as grueling as the first set (and man, THAT was grueling), but I guess I’ll find out soon enough!

Today, hubby and I spent an obscene amount of money shopping for new summer clothes, since our current wardrobe is about half a decade old. I had a lot of fun, but I’m definitely wincing right now. Hey, whattya gonna do? Shit you need is shit you need. The sales today were RIDICULOUS since the stores are cleaning out for the fall line. Considering what we paid for, we got an ABSURD amount of merchandise. Hubby managed to get a $200 pair of pants for $20, so yeah, can’t complain too much!

Now I’m just sitting with a glass of wine and ready to get back into 11/22/63. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! Until next time…

Our love is so right, I wouldn’t waste a minute here tonight…

Listening to “So Right” by Dave Matthews Band.

Thank you everyone for the congrats and well wishes on my vacation. πŸ˜€ I’m enjoying it immensely, and juicing it for all it’s worth.

Time with my family was well spent and I relaxed on the beach for hours. My hubby and I walked the length of Goosewing Beach Preserve in Sakonnet, RI. This is definitely one of my favorite places in the world! Otherwise, I ate lots, drank lots, and just caught up on life in general.

I’ve been writing a ton (at least, for me) and added about 6.5K words to A Beautiful Lie in three days.

40088 / 100000
(40.09%)

YAY!

I took today off to review what I wrote because, really, when I first get the words down, I’m just spewing nonsense. And since the last scene was a long, pretty intense sex scene, I needed to invest a good amount of time into it (hence why I tend to write only about two sex scenes per novel). Sex, action, and very emotionally-charged scenes drain the life out of me, so I literally need to take breaks from them. Not to mention, I’m a perfectionist and I need it done right before I can move on. I also tend to write from the male point-of-view, which definitely makes things interesting, but I have so much fun with it! The few people who’ve read them seem to really enjoy it, so what the hell.

What about you? What are your favorite types of scenes in the books you read or write?

I also added a bunch of songs to the Soundtracks page, for those interested. πŸ˜€

Hope all of you had a wonderful week, and hang tight, the weekend’s almost here!
