Character interview with Amber Dempsey from HEART OF A MARINE!

I have a special treat for you guys today! I have six-year-old Amber Dempsey from Patty Campbell’s HEART OF A MARINE for an interview today! I’m so excited to share my conversation with this sweet, adorable girl! Check it out and see what’s in store. 😉

Hi Amber!!! *waves ecstatically* Welcome! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Amber Dempsey and I’m six and a half and my daddy is Dwayne Dempsey and he has two brothers, Uncle Dylan and Uncle Donovan. Uncle Dylan telled me he’s the handsomest brother, but I think it’s rilly my daddy. I have another uncle, Uncle Cluny, who’s not my rill uncle but he’s my daddy’s best friend and my godfather. I’m not sure what a godfather is but they were in the war together and my daddy got his leg blowed off and Uncle Cluny was hurt in his head and he helped my daddy take care of me when my mom had to leave after I got borned.

Wow, sounds like your Uncle Cluny is a great guy! And I’m sorry to hear about your dad. :/ I’m glad he’s doing better, though. What do you like to do for fun?

My most favrit thing is Cinderella. I just love her so much and Daddy lets me watch her movie over and over and he reads me all the stories. I also like to ride my bike and go to the beach with Uncle Cluny and we go belly boarding and stuff like that.

I LOVE Cinderella! And belly boarding! That’s awesome. 😀 If you had a day to do anything you wanted in the world, what would you do?

I’d love it if Daddy would take me and Marla, she’s the one I want for a new mom, to Grammakat’s ranch in Wyoming and teach Marla to ride a horse and do ranch stuff. Daddy and I are going to go live there some day and I want Marla to come too, but my daddy is so sloooow! I know he rilly likes Marla but no matter how much I tell him I want her for my mom he won’t ask her to marry him. I’m not giving up though!

Ha, daddies can be silly sometimes, not seeing what’s right in front of them. 😉 What’s your favorite food?

Macaroni and cheese. My daddy makes the best macaroni and cheese in the whole world. We both love ice cream too, but sometimes I won’t let him have any if he said bad words like when he was in the Marines. I don’t like bad words. They hurt my stumik.

I’m glad you’re keeping your daddy in check! What do you love most about him?

My daddy is big and strong and he loves me more than anybody, even his brothers and his mom. He never yells at me but I can tell when he’s mad. Like when he tells me I’m too bossy. Sometimes I have to be bossy becuz we don’t have a mom in our house and somebody has to tell him what to do!

You’ve got that right, Amber! What do you love about Marla, the lady you want for a mom?

Well, lotsa stuff, like she’s rill soft and cuddly and she has the best dog in the whole world, Skipper. Daddy calls him a mouse, but I know he likes him too, but not as much as he likes Marla. Mostly I love Marla becuz she doesn’t care that he got his leg blowed off in the war and wears a wooden leg. It’s not rilly wooden, but he calls it that. He telled me that if he marries Marla I can’t be his boss any more becuz she’ll be the boss of him and me and the house. She’s rill bossy just like me. Uncle Cluny calls her Boss Lady.

You girls could take turns being boss, why not? 😀 If I could grant you three wishes, what would they be?

Marla for my mom a’course. Dint I already tell you that? Next I spose I would wish Uncle Cluny didn’t have so many bad war dreams, and then I want my own dog. Daddy promised me I could when I was sponsible enough to take care of it. I am! For gunnis sake! How long do I have to wait?

You sound like quite the responsible lady to me! Every six-year-old needs a pup. 😉 Well, Amber, I hate to say it, but it looks like our time is running out. 😦 Any last words you’d like to say to everyone?

Maybe they could send me some ideas about what else I have to do to get Daddy to ask Marla to marry him? I’m rilly getting frusterated with him.

I’m sure we can come up with plenty of ideas! 😀 Thank you so much for talking with us, Amber! We loved having you! And thank you, Dear Reader, for hanging out. 😉 Check out more about Amber and her dad’s story, HEART OF A MARINE, below!

2024809

(Well, hello thar!)

Falling in love wasn’t part of the contract…

Single dad and wounded warrior, Dwayne Dempsey, has no idea what he’s bargained for when he signs a construction contract with the curvy Marla Danaher to honcho her condo conversion. The last thing he needs is a sexy property developer breathing down his neck every step of the project. Her strong-minded bossiness should turn him off, but oddly, only makes her more desirable to him.

Marla Danaher has no time for dates, flirting, or marriage. She leaves that up to her twin sister, Charlene. Building a solid financial future and determining her own destiny are her top priorities. Unfortunately, the former Marine running the construction project she’s poured everything into only complicates everything. His teasing sexual innuendos drive her to distraction, and she can’t ignore his raw physical strength and masculinity. They’re on each other’s nerves day in and day out, but that does nothing to diminish their strong attraction sparking between them. Too bad love scares them both.

When the mother of Dwayne’s daughter suddenly reappears, things take a nasty turn as she fights for sole custody of the child she’d abandoned. There’s no way he’s giving up his daughter, but when a series of break-ins and threats begin, his protective side flares to life. How can he protect those he cares for most without driving them away?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

PattyWebsite photo.jpg

Who is Patty Campbell you ask? Well, here’s the scoop. Nine-Eleven was a turning point in my life, as in so many others. It brought home how suddenly a world can be turned upside down, and why if there are things I wanted to do, I’d better do them. I wanted to write love stories.

I was increasingly burned out in my profession of thirty years, and time waits for no one. I’d been widowed for six years, so what was keeping me there? I sold my travel business and coffee bar, and my big house and moved to the wide open spaces of Wyoming. The breathtaking view of the Grand Teton Mountains from the dining room picture window of the small house in Jackson Hole clinched the deal.

Heaven on earth. The perfect place to take a cleansing breath and write. I loved every minute of it, including the deep snow of winter. There’s no substitute for a cozy fireplace and a good book.

The path to publication is hard, slow work. I love the books I’ve written and hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed creating new worlds populated by special people.

Giveaway and interview with contemporary romance author, Aria Glazki!

Well, hello there, lovelies! 😀 I have the fabulous Aria Glazki on my blog today, talking about her latest spicy contemporary romance, TASTING TEMPTATION, and she also has an awesome prize-pack giveaway! Check out her stories (both personal and fictional)–they’re definitely worth the read. And don’t forget to enter the giveaway below!

Welcome, Aria! Tell us about your latest release.

Tasting Temptation is a super spicy contemporary romance, featuring a couple of characters who want nothing more than some sexy fun from each other—at first. For several chapters, Hunter and Gina don’t even know each other’s names, and neither expects to see the other after the wedding that opens the book (yes, you get to see that happy moment between Kane & Sabella from Mending Heartstrings!). Of course, life gets in the way of their plans, both letting them have a bit more fun together and forcing them to deal with the other’s real-world identity.

Wedding hook-up, sounds awesome. 😉 What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?

Gina starts this story trying to move forward from a really difficult and hurtful relationship, one which left her with wounds that she’s mostly trying to ignore. Writing that in a genuine way, and leading her through her path to healing in a realistic and relatable way, was definitely a challenge, because as the author you want to be both sensitive to the character and true to life.

The easiest part was knowing she deserved to move past what happened and to find happiness, with a wonderful guy like Hunter—and then getting to make that happen.

Totally agree! Writing about a character with a traumatic past and trying to stay true to that past is always difficult. If you could bring one of your characters (villain or hero) to life, who would you choose? Why?

It would probably be Kane, a considerate, charming musician who also knows how to cook and stands up for his convictions. Then again, he has an advantage—he’s the first character from this world who came into my mind and started me on the crazy journey that is being an author.

You can never forget your first! 😀 Paramount Pictures wants to make a movie about your latest novel. Who plays the main characters?

Can I poll the audience for this one? I don’t actually create “casts” for my books, usually. I have considered that maybe Olivia Munn could be interesting as Gina…

6901428-olivia-munn-hot

…though I’m sure there are many talented actresses I haven’t heard of who could do the role justice—and that’s why movies have casting directors. 😉 I’m happy to hear suggestions on who should play Hunter!

Touche, re casting directors! Although, I am a big fan of creating casts for my novels–it’s fun and gives me great visuals. 😉 So tell us a little about yourself!

Honestly, my characters are the interesting ones, not me. I’m fairly introverted, and at times I pine for the days when authors were allowed to be recluses, although I love all the wonderful people I’ve met through social media, NaNoWriMo, and RWA. Still, I struggle with all the talking about myself that modern authorship requires. But I promise, I’m much friendlier than it may seem—just shy. As you see here, ask me a good question and you can hardly get me to shut up!

Social media is great fun but can be incredibly draining at times. Tell us one thing about yourself your readers may not know about you.

I was born in a country and city which no longer exist (politics are complicated, right?). Bonus: that bear story in my bio is absolutely true (see below!).

Wow, that is fascinating! Sounds like something out of an espionage movie. 😉 What are you working on now?

I’m continuing work on a modern-day retelling of an old French love story, which has been my most time-consuming project to date—it will be a novella, but it’s already taken me over two years to draft (still not done—ack!). I’ve also started work on Bobby’s story; he’s a character who makes an appearance in this book though you see more of him in Mending Heartstrings. And I have about a dozen more projects in my head, all angry at me that there’s just not enough time in the day…

I can definitely relate, haha! So many stories, so little time. 😀 Thank you so much for stopping by and chatting with us today, Aria! And TASTING TEMPTATION sounds like a great read! Where else can we find you?

I’m on Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads, and I just joined Instagram, or you can go directly to my website and join my newsletter. I’m also always happy to hear from readers via email: contact AT ariaglazki.com, or there’s a mailing address available on my site. Basically, any way you’d like to contact me, you can 🙂 And of course, I’ll be hanging out right here, checking in on any comments!

Awesome! And now for more about TASTING TEMPTATION:

tastingtemptation-glazki-ebookweb

After last summer’s failed attempt at romance, Gina is absolutely done with men. And especially with millionaires. She has a good job as a fashion editor and amazing friends, and she’s decided she needs nothing else. All she really misses is the sex. But that rush just isn’t worth the risk of being ensnared in another relationship. When the hot bartender at her best friend’s Sonoma wedding suggests some harmless stress relief, she takes him up on the offer. When it’s sufficiently satisfactory, she indulges in a repeat–for the road. When she learns he’s actually the wealthy owner of the vineyard, the mix of fury and fear is damped only by the knowledge that she never has to see him again.

Hunter Cavaliere is determined to honor his grandfather’s legacy, and so far, he’s right on track. The vineyard is thriving, he has plans for expansion, and his wines speak for themselves. The only thing missing is the right woman to share it all. But through his grandparents’ marriage, Hunter learned what true love is, and he’s unwilling to settle for anything else. A woman who judges him because of his money definitely isn’t high up on his list. Still, when circumstance unbelievably keeps bumping him into the intriguing brunette from Portland, he can’t shake the feeling that she is someone he should pursue.

Gina’s poised to run the other way, but one more taste of Hunter may just prove too tempting to resist.

Love and Light in Paris by Kim Hotzon!

Long time no chat, lovelies! Today I have contemporary romance author Kim Hotzon talking about her latest release, A TIME FOR LOVE IN PARIS, and she’s talking about the City of Light itself. She has some fun factoids to share, so take it away, Kim! 😀

Kim

I’ve been to Paris only once. But it was a remarkable trip, leaving an indelible mark. I still fondly recall the day my husband and I rode through the streets of Paris on bikes, toting them onto the train to Versailles. Once in the town of Versailles, we picked up a quick lunch (bottle of wine, baguettes and raspberry tarts) which we enjoyed on the palace grounds.

Paris is an architectural candy store. Filled with endless avenues and boulevards of jaw-dropping museums, every street corner holds surprises and delights. Even the metro signs have a style all their own. What follows is a few interesting facts about Paris, the city I based my novel on, A Time For Love In Paris. Enjoy!

  1. The City of Light is not referencing the streetlights—a common misconception. The light references the history of Paris as a center of education (enlightenment), drawing many artists and academics.
  2. Paris hasn’t always been called Paris. The original settlers were a Celtic tribe called Parisii and the Ile de la CitĂŠ was later settled by Romans and named Lutetia.
  3. Paris is the most visited city in the world, ahead of London and New York.
  4. The Pont Neuf (New Bridge) is actually the oldest bridge in Paris and was the first bridge built without houses.
  5. It took 666 years to complete the building of the Louvre (which once served as a royal residence). It now houses over 35 thousand works of art and is the most visited art museum in the world.
  6. The Catacombs (underground sewers) were filled with stacks of bones beginning 200 years ago when local cemeteries became overcrowded and smelly. The process of repatriating the bones took 70 years and visitors to Paris can tour the Catacombs by foot.
  7. During WWII, French Resistance cut the cables to the Eiffel Tower’s elevator. Hitler would have been required to climb over 1,000 steps to reach the top. Hitler declined.
  8. The city motto of Paris (translated to English) is “It is tossed by the waves but does not sink”.
  9. It is a city law that no building in historic Paris can exceed 6 stories “so that all have sunshine”.
  10. There are more dogs (300,000) living in Paris than children.

So cool! I definitely need to book a trip to Parisii! 😀 And now more about Kim’s latest release:

In 1975, Elise Sutherland, a young woman from Scotland, travels to Paris, France, to study art at the illustrious Fine Arts School of Paris. Stumbling upon a mysterious old book in the infamous Shakespeare & Company bookstore, her world opens up an undiscovered realm. Elise finds herself in late nineteenth century Paris, becoming the muse of master painter and sculptor, Michel Flaubert. Together, they share their passion for art, architecture and each other. Inspired by the book, Elise and her lover spend idyllic weekends visiting famous landmarks throughout the city. As their love deepens beyond infatuation, Elise and Michel struggle with the impossible boundaries of their relationship. Their love affair is threatened by the presence of Michel’s friend, Henri, whose jealousy will have long-lasting consequences for Elise and Michel. When Michel departs on a visit to Lyon, Elise believes it is forever. She returns to her modern life, where she lives for decades as a solitary woman in France.

Michel Flaubert is a successful painter in 1895 Paris. As his career takes off, he discovers an unusual woman lurking inside his studio. Perplexed by her manner, Michel finds her beauty breathtaking and he endeavours to paint her. There is simply no other woman in Paris like Elise. Though puzzled by her frequent disappearances, he embarks on a love affair with her that turns into true love. But when he returns from a holiday to visit his parents, Elise is gone without a trace.

In 2015, when the Louvre museum houses a temporary exhibition of Impressionistic art, Elise spots a statue crafted in her likeness. Only one man’s hands had the ability to create such a masterpiece. Elise locates the old book, once again visiting the past, where she searches for her lost love. Returning this time to 1936, Elise enters a dangerous period with Europe on the brink of World War II. Will she find Michel in time? Will she have one more opportunity to experience lasting love, before it’s too late?

Interview with romance author, Ryan Jo Summers!

The fab Ryan Jo Summers is back on my blog again, this time for an author interview! She’s talking about her latest romantic suspense, UPON THE TIDE, and Chris Pine (YUM!). Read on to find out more!

Welcome, Ryan! Tell us about your latest release. 😀

It’s called Upon the Tide and follows the adventures of high fashion designer and New Yorker Piper Kincaid and beach bum Kade Wyatt. They start out being in the wrong place, wrong time but it soon turns into much more.

Sounds awesome already! What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?

Hardest thing was moving the story along. I’d write myself into corners and need to go back a few steps. And researching all that Caribbean geography. Wow! I could be a tour guide now. Easiest was the boat. I could live on that sweet baby—if only it were real.

The Caribbean and a boat? I need that, stat! If you could bring one of your characters (villain or hero) to life, who would you chose? Why?

Kasey Griffin in “Glimpse Eternity”. The story began as therapy for my current life situation and Kasey was the literary soul I dumped all my problems on. She met my challenges, surprising me with both her courage and her stamina. I’d like to meet her in real life, shake her hand, give her a hug and buy her some coffee.

I can totally relate to that. 🙂 So Paramount Pictures wants to make a movie about your latest novel. Who plays the main characters?

I’m going through a Chris Pine infatuation. He has some killer baby blues and would make a great Kade Wyatt.

f0e7fe69bb716f41ded2d9e5ab8d0e9c

(GORGEOUS!)

Piper would need an actress who can play cool and collected, but also have a soft side that sometimes surfaces, pushing that professional polish aside.

Great choice. 😉 This girl approves of those baby blues! Tell us a little about yourself.

I live in North Carolina with my beloved pets. I abhor technology, especially all this new-fangled stuff out lately, but I am learning to slowly appreciate its usefulness to my writing. My idea pastime is hanging out on the wicker sofa on my porch, my dog at my side, watching the falling rain, listening to the wind chimes blow and birds flittering at the feeders. I work on current or future projects and dream of having horses again. Fall and winter are my favorite seasons and I always have a mug of sweet coffee at my side.

Fall, dogs, and coffee, some of my favorite things! 😀 Tell us one thing about yourself your readers may not know about you.

March 2015 I adopted a collie from a state collie rescue group. He has severe PTSD issues and suffered a horrible existence for six years before I adopted him. I am chronicling our challenges and growth in a blog and hope to one day turn my journal into a book to share with other families who adopt troubled animals. I am a huge adoption-option advocate and most of the animals in my house came from rough origins.

Aw, that is SO fantastic! I have two cats who were feral kittens, ridden with parasites and starved, and now they’re so spoiled and I LOVE THEM TO DEATH. I’m thrilled you’re doing this and I’ll definitely have to follow this blog of yours. Anywho, back to you. 😉 What are you working on now?

Several things. One, Ty’s rescue blog, which is seemingly always running behind. I am nearly done with my problem child, a women’s fiction novel. Chocolate fudge layer cake is in my near future once I type ‘The End’ to that sweet hunk of manuscript. I have two novels from yesteryear that I am going to re-write this summer. One is a Christian romance and one is a time travel. My two loves. Lastly, because that isn’t nearly enough, I am starting the research for a seventeenth century pirate love story. I probably won’t actually write it till 2017 but it’s needing lots of historical research. That pirate might be one character I’ll want to bring to life.

I love me some pirates! Looking forward to it. 😀 Thanks so much for stopping by again, Ryan, and to you Dear Reader, for sticking around! Tell us where else we can find you!

Now for more about UPON THE TIDE:

Upon The Tide Final 600x912

New York Fashion designer, Piper Kincaid, just wanted a pleasant visit with her cousin down in Florida. That was before she and handsome beach bum, Kade Wyatt, become the targets of a gang of robbers and killers.

Kade simply wanted some fish for his pet seagull. Now he and the lovely exec from out of town are caught in a deadly game of cat and mouse. He’s busy concentrating on Piper when he should be focusing on keeping them alive.

Fleeing for their lives aboard Kade’s houseboat, ‘The Hightide’, they experience risk, surprises, mystery and romance during the Great Caribbean Boat Chase. However, the biggest surprises are waiting for them back at port.

EXCERPT:

Kade moved over to the window, lost in thought for a moment. “I’m not quite ready to share that with anyone, especially someone I just met today,” he said softly, picking up his hat and toying with it before tossing back to the sofa.

“I don’t even know you,” Piper said pointedly.

“You know me,” he corrected, working up to a grin. “We’ve been robbed together, we’ve been shot at together, now we’re stranded here together. Tonight we are going to sleep together.” His grin reached full size at that. “How much more would you like to know me?”

EXCERPT:

This section is taken from Chapter 4. Title character Irina is still coming to terms with the fact that ‘variant’ really means mutant with a noticeable gift or ability. We get a chance to see Irina having a vision. And we get a first glimpse at the aquakinetic, pyrokinetic, and impossibly strong variations in three other core characters.

—

We reached the end of the Harbour and the coastline opened up around the corner. I saw a sign for ferries to the US in front of a giant concrete breakwater and a pub decorated with a helm wheel and a mural with starfish and orcas. The hazy soft blues of the ocean and sky were broken by the jagged edges of American snow-capped mountains on the horizon. The seaside sidewalk had a mix of young families, dog-walkers, and spry seniors in trendy windbreakers.

“You know what they say about the people here in Victoria, right?” said Jonah, as he watched me watch everyone else.

“No, I can’t say that I do. More money than they know what to do with?”

“True, but not as bad as Vancouver. Ever heard of the saying ‘newlyweds and nearly deads’ or as my mom says, ‘God’s waiting room.’”

“Kind of a dark way to look at things, isn’t it?”

“My mom’s a dark lady, but hilarious. I hope you don’t mind, but I also invited Cole and his sister. You’ll love this little restaurant. It’s got awesome food and live music, but not too hipster-ish,” said Jonah.

Something dropped in my chest. If Cole brought his sister, we were just a group of friends going for dinner. I felt silly for having thought that we were going on a date. We turned another corner and Jonah pulled the car over next to a brick building with a 50’s style neon sign that read ‘Cymbals’ next to a caricature of a drum set. I followed Jonah through the wrought iron gate and looked up at the oak tree on the lawn next to the patio. Tiny fresh leaves and new buds covered the gnarled old tree. It was also home to dozens and dozens of sneakers, canvas shoes, skate shoes, oxfords – basically any kind of shoe with laces to tie together.

The air felt warm enough to linger, so I walked over to the tree and looked upward. I smiled. I reached up to one of the lower branches and touched one of the shoes. The yard and the tree melted away. I saw the face of a girl with faintly bluish skin and platinum hair. She turned and I saw two leather-like wings flex and relax. Her shirt had been cut to make room for her wings which stretched out past the frayed edges of the fabric. She was standing in a sewer or catacomb.

Faces milled around the winged girl. It wasn’t quite like a party, maybe more like a camp. An older lady standing next to the winged girl reached down to the ground. She pinched the concrete and plucked something, maybe a stone, off the surface. The stone wriggled. It was a camouflaged beetle, exactly like the one I’d seen on my first day in the city. She lifted the beetle to her mouth and I reeled back.

The yard outside Cymbals surrounded me again in a blink. Jonah stared at me. I noticed my arm had stayed raised beneath the shoes and withdrew it.

“Are you all right?”

I heard fear in his voice.

“Rubin mentioned that you were psychic, but I never knew what it actually looked like. I mean, I’ve never witnessed anyone ‘see’ something if that makes sense.”

“Oh, I … what does it look like? It’s still pretty new for me. I’ve always been alone when that happens, but I hadn’t even wondered what somebody watching me gets to see.”

“You looked sort of, gone. And then your eyes rolled back for a moment. I thought you were having a seizure.”

I looked around the yard and fortunately we were alone. Still, I didn’t want to keep talking about this stuff where we could be overheard. More importantly, what was Rubin doing sharing my personal information while giving me his best poker face?

“Let’s go inside. I’m hungry.” I didn’t much feel like sitting down to a social night anymore.

Cole waved from a table on the other side of the building. Sitting next to him, a girl with purple dreadlocks looked up from her purse and smiled.

The restaurant was full and the combined conversations created a loud chatter. Dim candlelight, a few glass chandeliers, and an antique-looking piano in the corner set a romantic atmosphere that sparked another twinge of embarrassment. On the other hand, the abstract and industrial mixed media wall décor had me looking around for art and film students. Aside from a few biker bars, the edgiest hangout I knew of in Prince George was an indie coffee shop – and it had only been open for a few years when I left.

We made our way around and between tables. Everyone in the restaurant looked like an artist or an intellectual. I felt like an ugly duckling in my plain, boring clothes, but I was glad for the first time since starting my new job that not all of the blue dye had gone from my hair. Jonah reached the table and pulled out a chair for me. We sat down and Cole scowled.

“Dude, what’s up with the timeline fail? We’ve been here for like, half an hour,” said Cole.

“Ignore his attitude. I’m Faith,” the girl said as she extended her hand to me and grinned happily. The flickering light glinted off a stud in her nose and a ring in her eyebrow. She wore dark makeup on her eyes and mouth. She had the same coffee brown eyes as Cole. I couldn’t tell if it was her features or the eyeliner and lipstick, but she looked striking in a bold, exotic way. As we shook hands, her gaze shifted over to Jonah.

We looked at our menus in awkward silence, waiting for a server, sipping our water. I sighed and put down my menu. I could feel Cole’s eyes on me as I watched Faith stare at Jonah, the only person still looking at his menu. I gave in and glanced back at Cole briefly with a small smile. This was all heading in the wrong direction. The time for tact expired along with my patience.

“So I take it we’re all mutants here,” I said casually.

Jonah sprayed water onto his menu and coughed. Cole looked at me urgently. Faith’s mouth made a small ‘O’ under her confused frown.

“Seriously, I came here, to Victoria, because I started having visions of this place and I wanted answers. All I’ve gotten is cryptic nonsense. Other than meeting you people, I’ve learned next to nothing. Rubin is all vague double-talk. It’s getting old. I want to know what you all know.”

Jonah looked at me and took a breath as if to say something. He decided against it and looked around our corner of the restaurant. Nobody paid any attention to us. He placed his hand over the droplets of water on his laminated menu. The water coalesced into puddles under his palm. As he concentrated on the small pool, it lifted off the menu and spread into a donut shape. The circle broke and the stream became a spiral, getting thinner and thinner until it evaporated into steam, absorbed into Jonah’s hand.

Faith’s frown turned into a smile as she looked at Jonah. She picked up one of the unlit candles on our table and pinched the wick between her thumb and forefinger. As she released it a flame sprang to life.

“Well, I’m not breaking this table, that’s for damn sure,” said Cole.

“That’s okay. I saw your street-fight with that bouncer when I first got to town,” I said.

Cole rolled his eyes, but I couldn’t worry about his temper. I wanted to keep talking about Innoviro and Ivan. “So, now that we’re making progress, albeit moving into some surreal comic book world, tell me what’s the deal with Innoviro. What the hell does this company really do?” I felt my adrenaline rise.

“I’m not risking my job so you can get a head start on whatever Ivan has in mind for you. You’re acting like there’s something bad going on here. He helps people like us.” Cole looked over at Jonah. “For some of us, being different is actually a health risk.”

“Dude, leave it alone!” said Jonah.

Faith frowned again. “You’ve met Rubin. He’s like a recruiter. He told you that much at least, didn’t he? He works with Ivan to find people like us and help, if they need it.”

“And what if I don’t need help?” I said.

“You may help others. We’re not all different in the same way. Some of us were born this way and some of us were … made,” said Faith.

“Ivan will talk to you about all of this soon enough. We’re really not allowed to and I think the reasons for that will start to be obvious. It’s not the kind of research the government likes. You can’t put this kind of stuff in a job posting and you definitely can’t chat about it at parties.” Jonah looked around the room again.

“So they’re doing tests on people.” I felt the unease in my gut churning faster. “On us.”

“It’s not like that. We are doing research and development work, but it varies. Sometimes we’re looking at mutation in other animals or plants. We look at weather and geography to understand how a person’s gifts are advantageous or dangerous, depending on where and how they live. Imagine me living in a desert, for example. And we’re not catastrophically testing on people. Sometimes we’ll take a small tissue or fluid sample from a person, but nothing barbaric,” said Jonah. “We’ve also got to make money. Innoviro takes research contracts from public and private firms doing anything from environmental research to mining and industrial development. Ivan keeps a low profile under the guise of confidentiality for his legitimate clients.”

“Are you guys even qualified for this? Or are you all older and more educated than you look?”

“Hey, we’re not screwing around here! Jonah and I were recruited directly from our graduate programs. I was working on a master’s in geology and Jonah had nearly finished his thesis in microbiology. Don’t you think research like this is best conducted by someone who understands it first hand? Could you imagine trying to convince a serious scientist to take this on, in lieu of a real career? You’d have to divulge every secret Innoviro has just to get them to believe the work can be done, let alone get a commitment.” The table crunched under Cole’s grip.

“And how about you?” I nodded at Faith, “Are you some kind of brain surgeon?”

“I’m an IT technician. I specialize in network administration and hardware integration.”

“Wow. I feel like a complete dunce.” I had nothing unique or meaningful to contribute to Innoviro. Nothing but a tissue sample.

“Don’t be intimidated. Remember that you were recruited for a reason. You probably won’t get to know everything the company does. We don’t discuss the details of our work with anyone but our supervisors,” said Faith.

“Lots of projects are shared on a need-to-know basis. But it’s not bad,” said Jonah. “You’ll understand more when Ivan gives you a full tour. Let it happen on his schedule.”

“I can go along for the ride here, but you’ve got to see how this looks from my point of view, getting drawn to a strange city by visions – which are an entirely new phenomenon to me. Have I mentioned yet that I got jumped the other night?”

“What?” said Cole and Jonah in unison.

“And you know why I didn’t get a look at him?” I said.

The boys had quizzical looks on their faces, but Faith looked anxious.

“Because there was nothing to look at,” I said. “Some enormous thing picked me up off the ground and threatened me.”

“You need to tell Rubin. Or Ivan, but not everyone in this restaurant.” Faith scanned the room tensely.

“No kidding.” I lowered my voice. “But since I don’t have a way to get a hold of Rubin, I have to keep my fingers crossed that he’s keeping tabs on me.”

“I’m sure he is. It’s his job to keep us safe,” said Jonah.

Author interview with romantic suspense author, Kenzie Macallan!

Well, hello there, lovely readers! I’m thrilled to have fellow CoLoNY member, Kenzie Macallan, on my blog today! She’s talking about her latest release, RIVETED (look at that cover, just look at it, seriously I’ll wait…did you look at it? Good. Now wipe that drool off your face! :D). Read on to find out more about this fabulous lady and her awesome debut novel!

Welcome, Kenzie! Tell us about your latest release. 😀

My latest and first release is “RIVETED” which is Book 1 in the Art of Eros Series. This book is about the oldest of three sisters, Marabella Luccenzo. What can I say, I love all things Italian! (Me too, ha!) Her sisters whisk her away to Mexico as a distraction to her recent tragedy. Her husband died under odd circumstances that left her with more questions than answers. Mara has a secret that has her create a barrier to protect herself from the pain and hide the secret. The landslide into her truth only starts with one pebble as she confides in her sisters her horrible reality with her late husband.

MacGregor Creighton “Mac”, a rogue Scotsman, shines light on the cold dark existence behind Mara’s wall. He’s usually a hit-and-run kind of guy with women. But Mara has him second-guessing his ways. Mac has a few secrets of his own that may destroy what he wants with Mara. He’s all alpha and pursues Mara whether she like it or not.

Both their worlds are shattered when Mara gets kidnapped. In her fight to stay alive, she makes some discoveries about herself and Mac.

Sounds FANTASTIC. 😀 What was the hardest thing about writing this book? The easiest?

This novel is a romantic suspense and one of hardest things to do is weave the romance storyline in with the suspense storyline. There needs to be a balance and yet seem natural to the story. I like to keep the reader guessing so as a writer I need to know when to drop little hints here and there without giving it away. I also get the best feedback from beta readers who love to tell me “I saw that coming” and then I change it up. The easiest part was writing my characters. They were constantly looking over my shoulder, letting me know exactly what they had to say and when to say it. They have very distinct traits and attitudes, as you’ll find out with Raquelle.

Beta readers are wonderful for sure (I know I love the heck out of mine!). If you could bring one of your characters (villain or hero) to life, who would you chose? Why?

I would bring Brock, Mara’s late husband, to life. I would want to know why he made the choices he made in life. Were his choices a product of his upbringing or did he always view the world a little differently? He is complex on so many levels and I only skim the surface in my book. Mara is shocked most of all. The wife is always the last to know! (Ack, don’t say that!) I think he is one of those “genius borders on insanity” type of guys. He has some great one-liners and oozes with sarcasm. I think the reader will come away understanding him but not forgiving him.

Hell, I’d like to meet him! Paramount Pictures wants to make a movie about your latest novel. Who plays the main characters?

In my dreams, Paramount would come to me for anything! I would choose Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) to play Mac,

Cast member Madden poses at the premiere for the third season of the television series "Game of Thrones" in Hollywood

and his partner Jenna Coleman to play Mara.

Jenna-Coleman-384807

We would have to rough Richard up a bit but he has the look and the edge. His partner, Jenna Coleman is a dead ringer for Mara. I also noticed that Kate Mara (ha, ha) could play Mara as well. I had to think it through a bit because I didn’t have anyone in mind when I wrote the story.

Love Richard Madden (big fan of GoT here ;)). So tell us a little about yourself.

I live in the Northeast with my husband and dog, Niko, who keep me very busy. Niko follows me wherever I go and is with me when I write in my office. I love dogs! I think they are a gift to humans. (Dogs are the best writing partners in crime!)

As a child I traveled around the world to places like Africa, Greece, Italy, France, Switzerland, Holland and England. My favorite country is Scotland and hope to go back someday. I wanted to stay forever the first time around but I couldn’t find a Scotsman to marry!

I always loved to tell stories and when the three sisters got caught in my dream catcher, I had to take notice. I’m coming to writing a little later than most in life but I really enjoy everything about it. I’m bowled over by the wonderful people I have met along the way and all the people that want to help you.

When I’m not writing, I’m reading all kinds of romance novels.

Sounds like you’ve definitely had some adventures (which I’m quite jelly of!). Tell us one thing about yourself your readers may not know about you.

In college, I started out on the pre-med track but decided I didn’t want to go to school that long. As it turns out, I have a couple of degrees, love to learn new things, and went to school just as long.

I love to paint oil portraits, mostly of children because they have so much wonder and curiosity in their eyes.

Oil paintings, that’s great! I was never good with a paintbrush. But I did do the long med-track thing. 😉 What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on Book 2 in the Art of Eros Series, EDGES. It’s Leigha’s story. Here’s a snippet:

While in Mexico, Mara’s admission of an abusive marriage triggers Leigha to have nightmares about an event in her past. Intrigued by the beautiful CIA operative, Sydney, she comes back to New York City and has a whirlwind affair but something’s off. During a photo shoot, she meets the hard edged Dean, who has an appetite for beautiful woman, fast bikes and shattered souls. After spending time with him her dreams become more intense and cloaked in red but she can’t quite piece it together. Other people’s secrets become entangled in her own. Through events that are out of her control, Leigha’s forced to face her demons allowing her to heal and let go of her control.

Wow, definitely has my interest! Fast bikes and shattered souls are my things too. 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by, Kenzie! So thrilled to have you here. 😀 Where else can we find you?

 Teaser 1:

She had affected him on every level, in every way, with her words, smile and body. He couldn’t stay still, torn between keeping his distance and wanting to show her exactly how he wanted her. He didn’t do dating. No strings attached, friends with benefits, always the safest bet. Obviously, Marabella wasn’t that type of woman and his pull toward her scared the hell out of him. All bets were off.

Teaser 2:

As her thigh rested between his legs, she could feel his excitement. She smiled to herself and decided to get a little daring. Hearing a groan come from him, a wicked grin spread across her face.

“Did you say something?” she looked up using her most innocent voice batting her eyelashes.

“Woman, you know exactly what you’re doing. Don’t play innocent with me.” Mac had a stern but playful look in his eyes.

Character interview with FBI profiler, Jeff Crandall, from HARD SILENCE!

I’m on a roll with the character interviews this week! And I have something a little different for you today, Dear Reader. I’m chatting with FBI profiler Jeff Crandall from Mia Kay’s HARD SILENCE who I happened to visit in the Sawtooth Mountains (talk about getting your isolation on!). Read on to check out what happened. 😉

Standing on the porch of a hilltop farm house, the field slopes down to a river and the tree-cluttered valley, and a neighboring small ranch is visible. The Sawtooth Mountains loom in the distance. I ring the bell.

The man who opens it has glasses perched on his nose, and his bright green eyes stare over the rims. His dark, shoulder-length hair is shaggy and graying at the temples. His beard matches in color, but it’s well-trimmed.

This interview could be fun. Dr. Crandall? I’m Linda.

He blinks at me, clearly confused.

Your SAC in Chicago called you, right?

“Shit. Sorry. Yes. Bob called a few days back.” He yanks his glasses from his nose. “I’m just trying to get a few things done before I have to pick Evan up at school. Come in, and please call me Jeff.”

I walk into a dark, cool hallway, and immediately turn right into what appears to be an office. The first thing that catches my attention is a lovely photograph–a landscape of a lone tree, its leaves silver-green in the fog.

That’s beautiful.

His broad smile, slashing through the dark beard, is almost as distracting as his thick eyelashes. This is definitely going to be a fun afternoon.

“Abby took it. It’s one of my favorites.”

When I turn to survey the room, the pictures on the opposite wall are startling. Crime scene photos are taped everywhere. Skeletons and excavation sites mark them as old burials.

“We can talk in the living room if you’d prefer.”

I walk along the wall, staring at the photos. “No, this is why I’m here after all. So Agent Myers–Bob–says you think all these cases are related.”

“You’re going to sit on the interview until we’re sure we’ve caught the killer, right?” When I nod, he relaxes. “Then yes, they’re related. I think a mother/daughter team was involved in the first three. After 1997, I believe the deaths were committed by the younger member of the team.”

Footsteps in the hall catch his attention, and he turns just as a young woman pokes her head in the door.

“I’m leaving for town, do you need–oh, hello. Sorry to interrupt.”

No problemo.

“Nope, but thanks for checking, Cassie. I’ll be at Abby’s tonight for dinner. Evan and I are going there after baseball practice.”

“I won’t wait up,” Cassie says, winking. She’s gone before I can say anything.

Given her resemblance to Jeff, I hazard a guess. Daughter?

He shakes his head. “Youngest sister. She came out for a visit and I can’t get her to leave.”

She must be a big help with your son. When I reach the end of the wall, I turn to see the rest of his notes.

“Son? Oh, Evan. He’s not…not really. He lives in the valley with Abby.” The alarm on his phone interrupts him, and he fumbles with the buttons, cursing until it quiets. “Sorry. I will never get the hang of that damn thing. Abby is Evan’s foster mother. We’ve sort of agreed to co-parent while I’m here. It’s a long story.”

Abby. Her name is on the makeshift workspace on the opposite wall. Below it are scribbled notes that I recognize as behavior patterns, phobias, and symptoms. You profiled your neighbor?

He runs his hand back through his hair, staring past me at the notes. “Um, yeah. She doesn’t like to talk about herself, so this was easiest.”

So baseball practice, dinner, sister, neighbor, little boy…when do you have time to catch a killer?

He snorts a laugh. “That’s a good question.” He checks his watch again. “I’m sorry to cut this short, but I really do need to get Evan. He shouldn’t stand on the sidewalk alone.”

Would you like me to visit again when you get back to Chicago? Maybe in your lab?

“That would probably be best,” he says as he grabs his jacket.

When will that be, Jeff?

“I’m due to be back in September.” He takes a deep breath as we walk to the cars. “Honestly, Linda, I have no idea when I’ll be back. Don’t tell Bob yet, okay?”

Your secret’s safe with me.

FBI profiler Jeff Crandall returned to Fiddler, Idaho, to work on new Bureau protocols in peace…and because he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about Abby Quinn. Kind, beautiful and quietly sexy, the petite rancher next door is loved by the entire town but keeps fiercely to herself. She’s a mystery that doesn’t want to be solved, though he’s desperate to try.

Whether that interest is professional or personal is a question he’ll sort out later.

Abby knows sharing her secrets would bring death and destruction to Fiddler. She survived her childhood, barely, but a long list of stepfathers weren’t nearly so lucky: their bodies are buried across the country, waiting to be discovered. The best protection is silence, anonymity and isolation, though the handsome agent next door seems hell-bent on destroying all three.

And he just keeps kissing her…

When Jeff is called in to investigate an interstate serial killer case spanning two decades, Abby knows it’s only a matter of time before he connects the dots, sees her for who she really is and walks away. But it’s when he’s standing in the crosshairs of Abby’s past that Jeff faces his biggest challenge yet: how to give the woman he loves the life she doesn’t believe she deserves.

EXCERPT:

She lay down on the blanket and stared up at the stars winking down at her. There. The one that looked pink was Connie. Pink had been her favorite color. And that one was Beau, and that one was Ron, and that one was John. The one there, all alone, was Walt. That fuzzy one there was the Toby Wallis had killed. The twinkly one nearest the horizon was Buck. And the brightest one, in the middle, was Papa.

Raising her camera, she focused on that one and adjusted the lens. She could see the wispy clouds in front of it and the drifts of stars behind it. Then she couldn’t see anything. Putting her feet flat, she pushed her back against the ground and prepared to fight. The auto-focus adjusted, revealing—not a monster—but gray hair gleaming in the moonlight.

Moving the camera, she blinked up at the obstruction. “You’re in my shot.”

“Sorry,” Jeff muttered.

He wasn’t sorry enough to move. Instead of taking the picture, she sat up, put her camera on the blanket and grabbed her ale. The sour apple flavor reminded her of Jolly Ranchers. She blinked up at him, waiting on his anger.

“Look, I don’t mean to ruin your evening or push you. Just tell me what I did to piss you off so badly you’d refuse an apology.”

Her skin heated. Shit. See? This is what happens when you try to be normal. People find out you’re weirder than they thought. “Why would you. Apologize. To me?” she asked, cursing that he’d approach her tonight when so many memories clanged against her tongue, begging to be told. “I’m the one. Who ruined. Everything.”

Without waiting on an invitation, Jeff sat next to her on the blanket. “Are you? I—” he ticked the items on his fingers “—didn’t let you cancel, didn’t make reservations, forgot our date, took you to the hospital for an emergency, and then asked you to talk about something very painful.” He looked at the bottle in her hand. “I thought you didn’t drink.”

“Only on special occasions.” She smothered her belch and put the empty in the six-pack.

“It looks like a very special occasion.”

She stared at the Jack Daniel’s bottle in his hand. Buck had loved Jack Daniel’s. “You seem to be having one of your own.”

“Anniversary. You?”

She wove her fingers through the yarn fringe on the blanket. She’d attached it after the satin border had given way during the first year she’d been here alone. “Anniversary.”

“Your father?”

“My best friend.” Abby preempted the question she knew he’d ask. “She was murdered.” The last word tightened her lungs.

“How old were you?”

You can do this. One word. Just this one. “Eight.”

“Did they catch him?”

It wasn’t a him, it was a her. And no, they didn’t. She got away, and she’s out there, and I can’t tell anyone. Every nerve in her body begged her to tell him. He’d find her monster. Just like he’d found Maggie’s monster last year.

But Wallis would escape. She always did. And then Maggie would have a new monster to fear. So would Faye, and Evan, and even Jeff. He’d pay for his good deed. So Abby glued her lips together and shook her head.

“Do you know how frustrating that is?” Jeff asked. “To be talking to you and have you just stop?”

“Then why spend time with me?” she countered. “Go home.” Though she used her best glare, he stayed put. “You can’t help me,” she persisted. “I’m not a. Victim. You can save.” It’s too late for me.

He took a sip of whiskey. “Can’t I just like spending time with you?”

No he couldn’t. He should go away. “Jeff—”

“I need someone to talk to, Abby. If I was back in Chicago I’d be out with friends, where I wouldn’t be stuck in my own head.” He looked across at her.

“What about Cassidy?”

“She’s out with Carter.” His smile widened. “She’s my sister. Didn’t she tell you?”

Not his girlfriend. She stared back, her skin heating even as her heart thudded. She ought to stick to her resolution. One last rebuff, after he’d confided in her, would permanently exile her. Taking a deep breath, she rehearsed the damning lines. I don’t care. Go away and leave me alone.

“Is this the date your father died?” she asked.

“Twenty-three years ago today,” he said. “It’s weird. I’ve not had him longer than I actually did have him, but it never gets easier. I was still looking for him in the crowd when I finished my PhD. Hell, I even dreamed Mom had him stuffed and put him on the sofa like a pillow. He’s missed all the experiences that made me who I am, but he’s colored all my decisions.” He sighed. “I feel like he’s looking over my shoulder, and I don’t want to disappoint him. And I have. One of his murderers was just granted parole, and I wasn’t there to fight it.”

She nodded. She felt a similar weight every day that Wallis walked free.

“Maybe it was meant for us to hang out together,” he murmured, nudging her. “My dad, your friend, same day. That’s a big coincidence.”

If this was Fate in action, she had a sick sense of humor. Still, it was comforting to share this loss with him, knowing he’d experienced something similar. Even if she couldn’t talk about it.

“What was her name?” he asked.

“Connie.” That was safe enough. No last name, no location. Just a little girl who’d died.

“Did you grow up with her?”

Abby shook her head. “I met her my first day of third grade. The desk in front of her was empty, so I sat there. We were wearing the same shoes.”

“So you became instant friends?”

She nodded. “We used to stay on the playground until she had to go home, swinging so high the chains buckled and we’d drop like we were on a roller coaster. Her braids would bounce against her back, and she’d whoop and laugh and start again.”

“I always liked the seesaw,” Jeff whispered. His breath brushed her ear. When she turned her head, they were almost nose to nose, and his arm was warm against her back. This close, his smile was blinding. “You looked cold,” he explained as if reading her mind. “My younger sisters were Brownies. Were you and Connie?”

“No. But she’d found an old handbook at the library, so we were working through it. One night we camped in her backyard and her dad showed us the stars while we roasted hot dogs and marshmallows.”

He shook out her extra blanket and covered their legs. The flannel trapped his body heat against her skin and concentrated his scent.

“What constellations did you learn?” he asked.

She pointed at the sky. “Big Dipper. Little Dipper. Perseus—”

Jeff pointed to her left, and drew a design. “There’s Cassiopeia.” Then another. “Andromeda.” Then he pointed to her right. “And there’s Hercules.” His fingers tightened on her hip. “You know, that thing you’re doing with your hand is driving me crazy.”

His words made her focus on the hand resting on his thigh. His well-worn jeans were silky soft, and she was rubbing the inside seam between her fingers. He shivered as her nails scratched the fabric. She yanked her hand away.

He pulled her back to him and placed his hand atop hers. Underneath were large solid muscles and bone, above were long, gentle fingers. Everything about him was comforting and not at the same time.

Character interview with Abigail Grant from OMEGA MOON RISING!

Hey, lovelies! I have Abigail Grant from MJ Compton’s latest paranormal romance, OMEGA MOON RISING (check out the cover below *drool*). She’s talking about her dire family situation and her sexy hero, Luke Omega. Read on below to learn more about Abby and her story!

Welcome, Abby! Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I just turned 21, but I feel so much older. As the first born of a sickly mother, I’m the responsible one. Somebody has to take care of the house and the family, so I do. My younger sister has a lot of issues and requires constant attention. And my stepfather—well, let’s just say he doesn’t fulfill the role my mother had in mind when she married him. So I have that to contend with, too. I thought I was worldly, but meeting Luke Omega changes everything.

Sounds like you have a full plate, for sure! What do you do for work?

My job was to take care of my mother and younger sister. Someday, I hope the local supermarket where Mama worked before she got sick will hire me as a cashier. I’d rather be a song-writer, but that doesn’t bring in money, and money is what keeps a roof over the family’s head and food on the table.

True, that. What about your free time? If you had a day to do anything you wanted, what would you do?

Someone I could truly trust would take over keeping tabs on my sister and I would find a place safe and quiet—a meadow or lakeshore–with my father’s guitar and compose.

Sounds amazing! What’s your favorite alcoholic beverage?

I don’t drink alcohol, but I have to say Moonsinger Beer, because it’s the industry that keeps my town alive. My father owned his own truck and contracted with Moonsinger to haul the product long distance. He provided a good life for us. And I met Luke at the annual Moonsinger Family Picnic. So yeah, Moonsinger Beer.

Good choice and for the right reasons. 🙂 What’s your favorite music?

Country music, of course!

Awesome! So more about this Luke Omega…what do you love most about him?

He does the right thing, even when he doesn’t want to. His instincts are good, even if his brain sometimes derails. He has always stood up for me, even when he thought he didn’t want me.

Sounds like a good man to me. 😉 Before the story began, what were your hopes for the future?

I was going to be a famous lyricist. I was going to sell my poetry to the local almost-famous band and his performance of my words would catapult us both into fame. Then I could take my sister and escape our horrible home situation.

So what changed?

Luke Omega, drummer for the afore-mentioned almost-famous band, sweet-talked me out of my panties . . . and my virtue.

*gasp* He’s a drummer, too?! I can totally see why he swayed you. ❤ I’d love to chat more, Abby, but it looks like our time is running out. :/ Any parting thoughts for our Dear Readers?

A girl’s first lover should tell her whether or not he’s a werewolf before he makes love to her. Finding out afterward is . . . a shock.

WHOA, yeah, no kidding! A good man, a drummer, and a werewolf…you really do have your hands full! 😉 Thanks so much for stopping by, Abby, and thank you, Dear Reader, for joining us! Read on to find out more about OMEGA MOON RISING and check out the excerpt below!

Abigail Grant has a secret . . . and a plan to keep her younger sister from suffering the same fate. Her strategy would have worked if she hadn’t been seduced by sweet-talking musician Luke Omega. Suddenly she’s plucked from the life she wanted to escape, but her new circumstances only expose her to a different danger—or is it her salvation?

Luke has a secret, too. He believes he can change his destiny through willpower—and a little blue pill. When he inadvertently gets mixed up in the Grant sisters’ troubles and his pack alpha orders him to marry Abigail, his family insists he tell her he’s a werewolf. But Luke claims Abigail is not his life mate. She doesn’t need to know what happens to him on the full moon.

Until he accidentally stumbles across her secret. Then all bets are off.

EXCERPT:

She, Abigail Grant, had a date with Luke Omega.

Gary was going to kill her. But Luke Omega would be worth the grief, with his dimples, blond curls, and the indent in his chin. Plus he was a celebrity. But most importantly, he said he would help her get her songs in front of Toke Lobo. After the concert was late, though, and if Gary ever found out, he would make her life miserable.

But she had a date with Luke Omega.

Abby thought about what the lateness might also mean—beyond being a better time to run into Toke Lobo. Luke had been kind to Libby, which meant he was either trying to impress her or he was genuinely a sweet guy. Since nice guys usually ignored her, he must be trying to score points with her by sucking up to her sister, who was difficult at best. Maybe he wanted sex.

Abby wasn’t much of a dreamer any more. When she’d been a little girl and her father was still alive, when she and Libby and Mama were the suns to Daddy’s moon, life had been full of possibilities. But a freak accident left Mama a widow with two girls to support. The last fantasy Abby allowed herself was that Gary and Mama got married because they loved each other. A whole week went by before reality betrayed her.

Nowadays, the closest she came to dreaming was wishing Mama would get better and divorce Gary. But Mama was dying and the family needed Gary’s paycheck and health insurance. Needed to keep paying the taxes on the little house on Silver Moon Terrace in order to keep a roof over their heads.

Abby couldn’t bring herself to tell Mama being homeless might be better. Safer.
